I have just read that, effective Jan 1, 2002, any satellite provider that chooses to provide only select local channels in a given area must start providing all of them.

I have been holding off on getting a dish because I need my UPN to watch Enterprise, which neither DirecTV nor Dish Network have been supplying to us here in central Indiana. Will this really be changing now?

Both Dish and Directv will be providing WNDY to Indianapolis beginning January 1st. As you know, Must Carry begins at that time. Television stations must ask that they be placed on satellite without compensation. If they ask for compensation, the satellite provider and station would have to come to an agreement. If they don't come to an agreement then the satellite provider does not have to carry that station. This will last for 4 years until "must carry" comes around again. They can continue talks until an agreement is reached. The station must also provide a tv signal to the local point of presence (pop) at the stations expense. Some stations may not be able to afford it so they may not be on satellite either.
Here is what stations both Dish and Directv will provide.
    Directv:
    WB WTTV 4 979
    ABC WRTV 6 980
    CBS WISH 8 981
    NBC WTHR 13 982
    PBS WFYI 20 983
    UPN WNDY 23 984
    Ind WHMB 40 985
    Fox WXIN 59 986
    ETV WTBU 69 987
    Dish Network:

    WRTV TV 6 ABC Available
    WISH TV 8 CBS Available
    WTHR TV 13 NBC Available
WFYI TV 20 PBS Coming By 1/1/02
WNDY TV 23 UPN Coming By 1/1/02
WTIU TV 30 PBS Must Carry Abandoned due to expense
WHMB TV 40 LeSea Coming Soon (1/1-7/1) Technical issues
WCLJ TV 42 TBN Coming Mid to late 2002
WIPB TV 49 PBS Must Carry Requested***
    WXIN TV 59 FOX Available
WIPX TV 63 PAX Coming Mid to late 2002

***Station may not be able to provide signal to local POP
**** Announced on the 12/10 Charlie chat. This station
Will not be carried "Due to Retransmission Concent Issues."
Insider at WTTV says Dish is doing the right thing because
WTTV "is asking for roo much money"
Negociations ongoing and hopes for quick resolution.

Dish has been providing UPN and WB nationwide through their "superstation" package. WSBK (Boston) and WWOR (New York) are UPN stations. Go to http://customersupport.dishnetwork.c...ocalsCheck.jsp to see if you qualify for the "Superstation" package. Everyone used to qualify for it but due to new laws, you have to see if you can qualify for it now.

That's it. The catch is, they only need to make them available to you. It doesn't mean you'll get them for free. Dish charges $6 or 7.00 per month for locals.

Well--I can't seem to get Dish Network's local channel qualifier to work. But I was comparing offerings, and they don't offer the Independent Film Channel anyway. So, I guess it'll be DirecTV for me. Then again, it doesn't look like Direct carries NASA TV...but I can always follow that on the internet.

Dish also carries the Independent Film Channel, but unfortunately only carries it from 6PM EST on Thursday to 6PM EST on Sunday. I've asked several times for them to carry it 24/7, but they said it was a "business decision" to offer it on weekends only. It may be a contractual dispute with Rainbow Broadcasting. Part time is better than not at all, but I keep hoping they'll add it on a 24/7 basis soon.

You should expect the elliptical dish to cost somewhat extra compared to the round dish. While it adds some complexity for a self install, it won't affect your other programming choices. Since DirecTV is moving all their local channels around with the launch of their new satellite, the oval dish may allow you to receive new programming in addition to NASA as well once the dust settles.

Not everyone will need an elliptical dish to receive local channels right?

You should be able to get a oval dish cheap by going to Blockbuster and signing up for thier cheapest system and tell them you want the ParaTodos (Spanish) option.

Then actually sign for Total Choice when you call it in (or switch packages after the installer leaves if they sign you up).

Then go to Circuit City and pick up a $100 DirecTiVo.

Now you have NASA for $105.

BTW it does look like ALL locals will come from 101 as of 12/27/01 - at least for now.

(Will the 110 {Greenville and something else) be moved to 101?)

So then why are people in this thread talking about the elliptical dish for channels?

By the way Peter, I was here in Charlotte when the new stations went into effect. My g/f called me all excited to tell me that we now had WB and UPN, so they are up and running on DirecTV. Seinfeld finally.
And PACERS! I live d/town and CAN'T get WB on antenna without putting something on the roof. I saw more Pacer games when I lived in Houston. [IMG]
