RIP Mr Cooke.

I listened to BBC World Service quite a lot as an undergrad, mostly from following football commentary and results on Saturday nights (pre-Sky days, there was hardly any live TV coverage), and each year in the month or so before exams I'd be cramming all night, with the BBC on. "Letter From America" was the one show where I'd stop studying and actually listen to from start to finish.

While I’m quite familiar with him as the long-time host of Masterpiece Theater, like Yee Ming, I often heard him on the BBC World News when I lived in former parts of the Empire. ;)

My wife caught his last ‘Letter’ about a month or so ago—I think it was on an NPR broadcast, but it could have been on the BBC World News.

And a series during the bicentennial, titled, America. He also wrote a book based on that series.

Well, more proof that they come in threes...

Jan Berry
Peter Unistov
Alistair Cooke

You know, I remember reading that Cooke spoofed his hosting role on "Masterpiece Theater" by appearing at the end of a "Monsterpiece Theater" sketch on "Sesame Street". I wish my recall was better.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

He will be missed...They all will be.
