ALIEN 35th Anniversary blu-ray (1 Viewer)

Did anyone ever figure out exactly where the 4.1 track on the Blu-ray came from? It does seem odd to have a separate 4.1 if it's not actually based on the old 70mm mix.

I may have answered my own question. Did some digging on other forums, and there are claims that the 1995 THX LD's sound was actually based on a pre-release test mix that was in Sensurround (which had all the rough sound editing), and not the final six-track Dolby Stereo mix that was used for the film's theatrical release.

So it could be that the Blu-ray's 4.1 track is actually based on the latter, and is therefore a fairly accurate (or as accurate as possible) representation of the originally released 70mm six-track release. Does anyone know for sure if any of this is correct?

I'm more into the ALIEN THX laserdisc thou like the clean up on the ALIEN 20th Anniversary as its got wider scope than bluray where its cropped off on the sides.

Did you take pictures of this 70mm show you went to?

Only way to compare is have the print and rig up 35/70mm with laseridsc player DVD bluay and do listening monitoring and waterfalls to see what is what? But I can compare with bluray and it doesn't have the deeper LFE.1 as you can see. You can come on around if you like.

Its a pretty loud mix depending on how much bass management you've got on. Seemed pretty weak sauce when I decoded the disc using PowerDVD only to roar to life on TrueMediaTheater. I know some people over at a certain AWFUL FORUM FULL OF WHINY HIPSTERS THAT I WILL NOT SPEAK OF were complaining about the 4.1 wasn't true because of that laserdisc sounded different. I of course have no idea, since I don't own it and I have never owned a laserdisc player. That said it doesn't seem like a remix to me, all the foley is pretty vintage sounding and there is quite a bit of directional dialogue effects in the front three channels. Now you can tell that a tiny bit of remixing has been done for the DTS since some effects sound "cleaner" and the surrounds are a bit more evenly split.

I saw it originally in the theater in 35mm. I've never seen the 70mm print. It would have been perfect for the end of the theatrical cut for the Anthology.

If I remember right, I saw Alien (that was one trip seeing all those blinking lights for the first time), Superman (iffy on this one) and Close Encounters (coming out of the theater just after it rained, clouds parting, crystal clear skies and all I'm hoping for is to see a spaceship) all in 70mm when they originally came out.

A couple of waterfalls of the right surround monitored on THX. I since put the ALIEN THX Laserdisc, Dolby 70mm AC-3, back on the shelf you'd have to ask for surround request waterfall for that pressing.

Well I can hear and feel and see the differences between the. The DOLBY STEREO DIGITAL to me looks more beefy like a good quality Sunday, British roast dinner with gravy.

I'd have to compare the waterfall with 20th Anniversary ALIEN, region 1, later on and see how it differs?

During the summer of 2010, they ran all (then) 11 Star Trek films as Saturday midnight shows, and 2 through 6 were 70mm prints. Wrath of Khan even had the original "II-less" title (funny the things you remember).

Keeping on topic, are we pretty sure that this new 35th Anniversary Edition is simply the existing disc in new packaging?

Yep, Alan Dean Foster. Both very good books.

ADF also wrote Aliens and Alien3, but he turned down the offer to do Alien Resurrection... man knows a POS when he sees one!

Yeah I read and no pictures on it. Sadly I don't have pictures of ALIEN at the local screening double bill 1990 late night show, 11pm. 35mm, ALIEN + ALIENS. It was nice seeing ALIEN first time over tv panned and scanned and ALIEN looked satisfactory on screen 2 downstairs with oddly shaped auditorium, rigged with DOLBY CP55 and lots of speakers for the surrounds.

In the past since having a camera it goes with me. Today I have stopped going to cinema now. No more cinema for now as ALL the cinemas local now are digital, and I have no interest in it.
