Has anyone else noticed the extremely dark lighting in this show? I started watching it a few weeks ago(one of the few shows shown OTA HDTV in my area). The characters faces are all in shadow, with bright windows and backlighting behind them in almost every scene. I tried adjusting contrast, brightness, room lighting. As I'm squinting to see facial expressions, my retinas are being blasted from the background. shheeesh..[IMG]

Yeah, the lighting sucks on Alias. (Note this is probably more apparent on the HDTV broadcast).

I understand low lighting can be an effective tool for a director, and that's fine when it's done well. But it's not done well on Alias. They should take a few lessons from CSI (Las Vegas, not Miami) to learn hot to effectively shoot in low lighting.

Hmm. It looks really good on my HDTV. No problem with the shadows and contrasts. Maybe ISF calibration helps...

    Jeff,

Hmmm. Maybe it's just you then! [IMG] Seriously, perhaps I'm just more tolerant of the contrasts...

    Martin.

I am watching Alias in HDTV as well (KGO-DT in San Francisco) and darkness hasn't been an issue.

I don't have any issues either. I think it looks great. I like the shots, scenes, lighting, etc... Now the practice is a dark show. But still nothing that gives you a headache. How big is the screen you watch it on?

I just watched it in HD for the first time last Sunday, and it looked fine to me.

One of my favourite shows and looks amazing too! Especially the bikini shots. I've never had to squint or adjust the picture to see facial expressions either. Weird. Any other shows do this to you David?

I know what you mean about the lighting. They're trying to give the show a more underground feel. I've never got a headache from it, though. I think you may just be more sensitive to the contrasts.

If calibration isn't an issue, you may want to look into one of those lights that go behind your RPTV to create more even ambient light and reduce eyestrain.

My main complaint is the excessive grain in the dark scenes. But I don't know if any of that has to do with my HDTV receiver's upconversion from 720p to 1080i, or not.
