On the back of the "Ali" DVD, it says that the DVD was "mastered in high definition".

What is "high definition mastering"? Sounds like it could mean that they are promising 1080i or better resolution, like and HDTV picture.

Is this just marketing jargon, or has this DVD been mastered to a higher level of resolution than the typical DVD?

I believe that it means the transfer for the DVD was made from the high definition master. While its not 1080, its better than doing the tranfer from an old non HD master.

Basically the theory of "It's easier to take away some from a lot, then to try to squeeze some from just enough"

OK

Let's say that 2 people painting identical walls

1 person has 5x the paint they need to get the job done

1 person has exactly enough paint TO THE SQUARE INCH to get the job done

Which person will have an easier time, and probably do a better job because they don't have to worry about running out of paint? The person with 5x the paint needed (the high-def master)

Make better sense?
