I meant to list these 'final four' individual releases last week when they were $13.99 each. The Birds IS coming the same day, but the preorder isn't available yet.
You can buy most of these region free from amazon.co.uk as singles they were released in Sept 2013 by Universal UK they also did a Vol1 & Vol 2 combining all of them but splitting across those 2 volumes which still give you a reasonable discount price wise on the singles price.
Some of the UK singles have very photoshoppy covers though which will make some purists unhappy they are THAT bad cover wise!
If you buy before 31st March amazon have 2 for £10 on most which is pretty good value otherwise they are around £7 each.
Seems to me that the 9 restored silents would be an ideal opportunity for a box set release. I can't imagine people buying them one at a time. Hopefully, we'll get Young and Innocent, Sabotage, Secret Agent first. The Lodger (and Downhill) is already out there in a Region B release.
Yes, this would have to be a multi company joint release for all 9 films to be in one box, but it can be done. Hell, throw in the talking version of Blackmail for an even 10!
No, Eddie. SC don't own any of the Tati films. They own a license to distribute them which is at the will of the Tati estate. The Tati estate has directed that the films go to Criterion in the US.Films SC own will not be on Criterion, therefore we will not get a single box in the US market.
Oh. Are you sure? I know that Criterion licensed Hulot's Holiday, Mon Oncle and Playtime from the Tati Estate, but that they had to go through StudioCanal for Trafic. Why was that the case?
All the licenses expired at a certain point last year, which is why all the Tatis went OOP.Tati Estate then did a deal for all territories outside France with SC, with the stipulation that the films would go to Janus/Criterion for the US. Trafic was under license to SC and then sub-licensed to Criterion for a period when their disc was released. They then pulled it along with other films, which is why the rest which had come direct from the estate held in print.
