I was just reading MS's Japanese XBox Live announcement and they get Phantasy Star Online as their pack in title, we get Re-Volt.....Them PSO, us Re-Volt.....just doesn't seem fair does it.

Hmmm...that does seem a little unfair. How well did PSO do originally over in Japan compared to in N. America? Certainly online gaming is more popular in N. America.

I'm not sure how I feel about the use of the word "Japs" in the title, but yeah, that sucks...

Yeah, using the term "Japs" might not be such a hot idea. I'm sure you probably didn't mean anything by it, but that's a WWII era term - and we're not at war anymore.

I altered the thread title, I know no harm was meant by the use of 'Japs' as for many years it haqs seen common use in the videogame world, but it's still best to post in full, especially on an international forum like the HTF.

Yes, that's me.

But I am quite unlike "the" Chris Rock.

I'm "Bigger and Whiter" than he is.

(Reference of course to Chris Rock's "Bigger and Blacker" album. No offense intended whatsoever.)

...meanwhile, back at the topic... ;)
This really sucks. Re-volt, is a pooooor 2nd place to PSO, even if it is a barely warmed-over rehash of a 1 1/2 year old Dreamcast game. I'd like PSO for free, but I'm not going to pay $50 for a lackluster port. And _especially_ if they don't alter the item distribution in the game.
But free? Yeah, I'd be all over that. Sega's like an abusive lover. They treat us like crap and we keep coming back for more. Reminds me of this old Penny Arcade:

Jeff-

You think Sega has no say? Trust me, Sega has NO love for Japan as we were the BIGGEST market by far for the DC.

Yep. Since the beginning of my infatuation with videogames you come across this harmless term, in trade mags, etc., but alas, it is a sign of the times in which we live. People clamoring to get offended where there was no offense meant (For crying out loud, it's Kelley's post and you know he's not like that!) - It forces us all to walk on egg shells. And the sphincters become tighter...
"Offense is found in the intent."
BTW, Dan, I don't mind if you call me a Yank instead of the full 'Yankee.' :)

I think this might be the wrong forum to post about a problem like that, James DS. Maybe a little lubrication would help you out?

I for one don't find this term harmless. Despite the fact that people seem to bandy it about with little thought it is still a racial slur and is therefore going to be offensive to some people. Would it really be so hard for people to type Japanese or even Jpn as an abbreviation?

I've been guilty of using 'Jap import' etc in the past, but changed after a thread like this featuring a few messages from Asian based gamers. I since use JPN or Japanese as much as I can.
