For a small budget speaker, the Titans are not bad. Is that about the price range? There's quite a few speakers right about that price that are very decent.

If you could step up to the mini monitors, I think they would be a great choice.
    Where are you located?

To my ears, the Minis are definitely better than the Titans.

www.mordauntshort.com - 902 (msrp is higher, but can be found for less brand new).

    www.nhthifi.com - SB2

If you aren't adverse to internet direct brands:

    www.axiomaudio.com - M3Ti

    www.ascendacoustics.com - CBM-170

www.av123.com - Rocket and ELT lines

    http://www.epos-acoustics.com/ - ELS3

Speaker age can be a factor for the midbass/woofer if the surround dries out and cracks. Most can be repaired inexpensively though, and most speakers will last a long time (10yrs?) before this becomes a real issue. If you're talking about 20yr old speakers, I'd expect this already.

Yes, at least for Paradigm. They make small changes to each new version. Little desgin "improvements" here and there.

I second the recommendations John G made but would like to add another.
