Rip your 4K with MakeMKV. Play the ripped file with PowerDVD (or other preferred player).

EDIT: I see you’re going to buy a standalone player and a 4K TV. That is the only robust, user friendly solution. I think you’ll be much happier with that. :)

Especially as I actually want to be able to play whatever 4K discs I buy! Ripping them just to achieve playback in any format just seems like way too much added cost and effort to me! :D

Recently, I've been torn between getting the Sony X700 and Panasonic DPU420K, both of which are listed on Amazon Canada, and are both listed as including Multi Region capability. In my research, I've become aware that Amazon U.S. has determined that while Multi Region players are legal to own, they are illegal to sell (?), which seems to account for the numerous U.S. based Amazon Reviews complaining that the Sony X700 doesn't have Multi Region capability as advertised (??) on Amazon U.S.

By contrast, several Amazon Canada verified purchase reviews confirm the Sony X700's Multi Region capability, whereas none of the Amazon Canada reviews for the Panasonic DPUB420K even so much as mention it one way or the other.

That said, my decision is a bit of a Sophie's choice, in that each player has desirable features that the other one doesn't, or at least isn't confirmed based on user reviews, especially given the state of players being falsely advertised as Multi Region on Amazon. For me, the Sony X700's biggest minus appears to be the lack of HDR10+ and HDR Optimizer (HDR10 is included!); while the Panasonic DPUB420K doesn't include Dolby Vision. I'm not concerned about the many audio codecs not included in the Panasonic. The Sony X700 is also a bit wider than I would like and costs over $100 more than than the Panasonic DPUB420K.

However, the deal breaker for me in regard to the Panasonic DPU420K is the lack of an extended warranty option, which I feel is essential, given the potential for laser/disc mechanism based failure. The Sony X700, on the other hand, includes a 2 year protection option for $33.33 by Asurion.

At this time, I believe I'll be going with the Sony X700.

Of course, to complicate things, my current setup won't allow for either the Sony X700 or Panasonic 420 to fit below my 43 Inch Hisense 4K TV, which has only about a 2 inch height gap. My only remaining option is to add it to the bottom of my stand, which currently houses my Toshiba DVD Recorder and Toshiba VHS/DVD combo, both of which have metal chassis. Their respective widths are approximately 10.25 and 8.75 inches.

This is where it gets complicated. While the Panasonic 420 has a metal chassis and measures about 10.5 inches wide, the Sony X700 has a plastic chassis, and measures about 12.4 inches in width. My main concern with the Sony is that it may be a bit too top heavy, but because the outside is plastic, placing it at the bottom or middle for better balance probably isn't a viable option.

Both the Panasonic and Sony options are a bit shorter than both of my existing players, so there's that, at least.

Any suggestions (Especially regarding the Plastic Chassis Sony X700!)?

You want to find a shelf - or piece of lumber - if necessary you can use books or similar to provide support on either side ...

Thanks for your input, Bryan! I'm also considering moving the VCR/DVD combo to another spot as I rarely use it. Hopefully, I'll have the Sony X700 4K player within the next week or thereabouts, and I'll be able to see just how the multiple devices will fit together!

Last night, I ordered the Sony X700 4K UHD Player, which is listed on Amazon Canada as supporting Multi Region Blu-rays and DVDs, with UHD Blu-ray Discs already being All Region, or Universal. I went with 220 Electronics Canada (Bombay Electronics is also listed with Amazon Canada for this particular item!), which hopefully increases the odds of the player being as advertised! Its estimated delivery date is this coming Wednesday.

I believe this is a modded-player - the X700 is not all-region for blu-rays/dvds out of the the box - Trust me I checked checked mine ;) ...
From their us website

"The Region-Free Sony UBP-X700 m is the newest UHD (Ultra-HD, or 4K) Blu-ray Player in the brand's lineup. Affordable and featuring plenty of features, this player will give you convenient access to everything you need for real home theater enjoyment. Offering more than just an amazing picture, the UBP-X700 we sell is a region-free model. This allows it to work with any TV, any voltage (110 to 240 volts) and to play discs from any region in the world. There's no need for video converters or voltage converters. Buy your discs from anywhere and use this player anywhere. It's totally universal. Just keep in mind that our Region-Free Sony UBP-X700 4k Blu-ray Player has been professionally modified for this functionality, and the region-free model is not available in department stores."

My SONY UBP-X700/M player was delivered by Amazon.ca this afternoon! It indeed does play Multi-Region DVDs, as advertised!! It played my UK Universal Laurel & Hardy SONS OF THE DESERT (1933) PAL Region 2 DVD, no problem!!!! I did have to wipe a fingerprint smudge of my PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1943) Universal 4K disc, as the audio did stutter during the opening credits! Afterwards, I was able to play the entire film, which looks and sounds rather good! The theatrical scenes with the huge chandelier have an almost 3D effect!!

The really nice surprise is that the player’s dimensions are way smaller than advertised, and it actually just nicely fits below my Hisense 43 Inch 4K Smart TV, so no having to futz around with my other two DVD/VHS players, YAY!!!! One thing that strikes me a bit unusual, is the AC cord (Which is a bit thin!) for the player is detachable. I guess they’re meant to be replaceable. 🤷‍♂️

All in all, I'm rather pleased so far! :)

EDIT: It can't be emphasized enough that to obtain Multi-Region Disc players, 220 Electronics (I've attached the related documentation they included inside the box!) is the way to go, and using them via Amazon Canada has worked out for me! I can't speak for using them via Amazon U.S. though, as I read something recently where they've concluded Multi-Region players are legal to own, BUT illegal to sell (?) !! 🤷‍♂️

Last night, I played my new TITANIC (1997) 4K ULTRA HD disc. About 2/3 of the way in it did freeze, as I've read 4K discs with triple layers sometimes do between the 2nd and 3rd layers on the SONY x700 and x800 players. It did play through after I changed one of the player's settings, so hopefully the hack posted on YouTube about a year ago (Turn off 4K upscaling, AND set the cinema conversion mode to video, the 2nd of which I hadn't done prior to my Titanic disc freezing!) will work on a fairly consistent basis, as the mileage seems to vary, in regard to this. 🤞

My new Acer Laptop has an i7 Gen 11 processor with 40 GB of RAM, and has Intel(R) iris(R) xe graphics. From what I could glean from Google search, maximum capable display resolution with the right monitor/TV should be a bit north of 4k, which is encouraging, should I get a 4K Display monitor down the road!
The bolded portion above, if anything, will be your bottleneck. Depending on the Iris chip being used, you may be ok, but you'll have to go into the drivers on this to make sure it supports the resolution and at least one HDR format.

I actually ended up getting a 4K TV, which I also use as my Laptop's monitor. It does the heavy HDR lifting for my Laptop, which doesn't support HDR. Thankfully, its drivers do support the full 4K resolution! 👍
