You should look in Consumer Reports for Nov 2001. There are several Best Buys in speakers.

I like NHT Super Zero's (discontinued) and being offered for $75 a piece over at www.onecall.com. This is an insane price for a quality speaker (brand new in the box w/ warranty).
I also like Paradigm Atoms, many people prefer the Atoms (smaller) to the Titans. Check www.audioreview.com for user reviews.

I just picked up some JBL's at jandr.com. Two S-38's for the front($300), Two S-36's for the rear ($250) and an S-Center ($167). I am extremely pleased with these speakers and J & R. I also have a Velodyne 12" sub. You can also try to bargain with J & R over the phone and get a few more dollars taken off of their already low prices (I got the S-36's which were priced at $300/pr for $250).

If you are capable of any basic DIY skills, these are a great little speaker for $140. The 10" sub that they mention is also a very great bargain.
