James, Ted:
I have agree about Ghost in the Shell. It's one of the best anime movies I've seen. Be careful of Spriggan, though. It's fun, but the plot is almost non-existent. I picked it up not having seen it, and after viewing it, I have to say my first thought was that all the hype was talking about some other flick. Don't get me wrong; it's fun, and full of action, but if you're looking for a deep movie, Spriggan isn't it.

Hi all. Am new to this thread having avoided the previous incarnation due to its massive length. I'm looking for a new anime series to invest my time (and dollars) in. I have Lain, Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Princess Miyu, and Gundam Wing, as well as the majority of the major movie releases (except Spriggan, which I am grateful that I've only rented). I'm considering Gasaraki and Trigun fo purchase and would appreciate any input about either of these series, or recommendations as too anything else that might be of above average quality that I might be missing out on. Thanks.

There are so many stores around here in Orange County. I mean, I saw the Lain Lunchbox at Virgin Records store not long ago (not sure if it's still there), when that lunch box was so high in demand on ebay. So, I think I'll bound to find a copy of the boxset sitting on a shelf collecting dust. If I do find it, I'll contact you immediately.
James_Kiang:
There's nothing "sexual" in Berserk, so there's no porno. It's just a "tone"...a "mood" so to speak between the two male characters, and a third female character, which makes for an interesting love triangle. *heh heh* Anyway, vol. 2 is coming out next week, and there will be 3 more volumes to come. The series consists of 25 episodes and Media Blasters is releasing 5 volumes @ 5 eps per disc.
Travis:
Gasaraki and Trigun are both great series in their own merit. Gasaraki has a very serious tone, so unless you're used to ultra-serious, political and military tone, the series may bore you. In addition, it utilizes mechas which do not go against the physics of real life. Great 26 episodes for those who are mentally into something that is into heavy serious drama. Trigun is a light comedy for the first half of the series and becomes darker in tone in the last half of the series. It's especially great to see the changes between the good and bad side of the main character. 26 episodes of comedic yet some dark drama.
SeanMc:
New Vampire Hunter D movie? None. Although Urban Vision will be releasing the newly released Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust with Japanese audio soundtrack, that Japan had released a couple of months ago for the R2 market.
The new release of Record of Lodoss War is from the better master from Japan, however, CPM still compressed the hell out of it on a dual layered disc, and so compression signs do show up, accordingly. In addition, the original intro/ending for the 13th episode is not there, replaced with the same ole, same ole intro/ending CPM uses for the rest of the episodes. I'm still waiting for the R2 to re-release the DVDs in separate volumes. The boxset sold out ages ago. :frowning:

Yep, Kong pretty much said it all. If you want to see my "professional" fanboy opinions on Trigun and Gasaraki, check out my site as I just added a review for Gasaraki and have had one up for Trigun since like last August.
Once again, the site gets some more advertisement :)

Kong,
Thanks for the comparison between the two releases. Glueing the spine to the box is, indeed, not a good idea. You may convert me to the R2 side after all :) It's nice to get an idea of how our releases stack up.

Don't get me started on the ltd. edition stuff, that drives me nuts. I still don't have the lunchbox (couldn't afford it then, and with two sets of Lain up here already, still can't afford it now), and Pioneer's little add-in goodies have me hunting ebay for things like the finger puppets for 3 volumes of Tenchi Universe, the standee for NieA vol 1, and copies of Dual with the clings.
Now with all the boxes coming out....grrr. :)

I guess I am kind of breaking into the conversation here... but do any of you guys have the Tenchi Muyo! OVA boxset? It is kind of pricey ($119 MSRP for 3 discs)... but I LOVE the show. Any opinions? :D
I saw an episode of Hellsing at my friend's house last night... good stuff. :emoji_thumbsup:

I've only seen the first few episodes, but what I've seen I really liked. One of the old anime reviewers for my site (granted he only reviewed one show :)) lived by all things Tenchi, with the original OVA standing in place of any other deity. He wrote a massive review if you want a better opinion. He was definitely a little...off, but at least he knew his shit.

Yeah, but at least you have the option of buying the MUCH cheaper boxset, whereas I was stuck buying each disc on sale for around 20-25 bucks per disc (bitching? me?). I know Planet Anime was selling the boxset for $110 and change a little while ago, I don't know about now, but either way that price makes me a little ill to my stomach :)

Tenchi OVA rules, one of my best purchases (despite missing out on the damn foil card!....) I liked the Universe set (missing finger puppets 1, 2 and 7), but of course that is now in a box. I still want to get Tokyo, but will need to find a complete set with postcards. I am getting the Mihoshi Special and Pretty Sammy TV whenever they are released. Yes, I'm a Tenchi freak.

If you get only one Tenchi, get the OVA box set. It's definitely worth paying full price for.

Having watched quite a few of Odex's R3 releases recently, I got used to the errors in the subtitles, but was pretty surprised to find the same types of errors in Pioneer's NeiA Under 7 series. Disc 3 is full of weird syntax and tense errors.

Great! I'll add it to my next DDD order :)
Why after reading this thread do I get the urge to buy the Escaflowne set... of which I have never seen an episode? ;)

Rob, start looking for another job. You may not need it now, but if you stay in this thread you most certainly will.

Joe-C: don't I know it, boy this stuff is addictive :frowning:
Another question on route to my further education in the genre, I have been recommended to check out Hellsing, which from what I read is vampire themed and seems interesting. However, all the episodes are not out yet right? So would there be a good chance Pioneer will release a big box set with everything in it after they all come out? If so I might just rent/borrow whatever is out and check it out.
Lain sounds pretty interesting too as I am a big fan of Lynch's work and it's often been compared to that, but people complain that there is no payoff at the end :). I wish I wasn't a sucker for these limited editions as now I can add the lunchbox to my existing quests ;). At least I'll stay in this thread more often instead of lurking and keep up with the releases (and go broke). Getting the Bebop box is my first priority though :).
Escaflowne should be arriving tommorrow, I'm looking forward to checking it out.
