...other than the ahem, "superbit" (aka "barebones to suit the rental chains") version?
I know it's released by Columbia so there will probably be 6 more releases of it before Christmas and I've probably just answered my own question but... help!

I'm sure there will be. Such an intelligent film certainly deserves more than a barebones release.

I think the Susan Orlean website mentioned a while back that she was helping create special features, so based on that, I'd say an SE is likely.

I bet Columbia is going to re-release all Superbit DVDs as Super-duperbit editions. Then don't forget the mega-super-duperbit edition. ;)

The new release is barebones? I don't have to navigate through a bunch of crap just to watch the movie?

I am so there...

I love Adaptation, however is a special edition of this movie really necessary? I mean, the movie is essentially about the making of itself. Would bonus materials really be relevant?

Anyways, Being John Malkovich really did not contain many worthwhile special features, so this one may not either. I could easily see Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman being the "let the film speak for itself" type. Particularly with Adaptation being the type of film that it is.

The "Superbit" release of Adaptation has a trailer and cast & crew bios. Although the packaging says it has animated menus, they're mostly just static and quickly move from one screen to another when making a selection.

Well, they could do interviews with the cast on how they approached their roles. And of course interviews with the real life Susan Orlean, John Laroche, and Robert McKee. I'd really like to see what Orlean thinks about the movie especially considering that they portrayed her as a pathetic psycho who cheats on her husband and chases people down with guns. They could give McKee his own commentary track! :D

The 7 1/2 floor presentation video is fantastic! I'm glad they included it since it's so funny. Granted Adaptation didn't have something similar they could include, but maybe there's other fun stuff they can add for a special edition. Perhaps a documentary on orchids narrarated by Chris Cooper as John LaRouche. Deleted scenes? The script I read had a lot of scenes not in the movie, but that's probably because it was an early draft. I saw clips of Spike Jonze and his DP filming the swamp scenes dressed in suits, a documentary might be cool.

Anyway I'd also like to know if a special edition is on the way or else I might make this my first Superbit purchase.

Yeah, it would be nice to have some features such as interviews, documentaries, etc. Adaptation is such a fascinating, original film that you just have to wonder what went into its production. I would like to hear Charlie Kaufman's thoughts on the film and the screenplay, but Kaufman and Jonze don't seem to be big on interviews. Spike Jonze would probably just puke again.

I would like an audio commentary by Charlie & Donald Kaufman.

That would be funny to have "their" comments edited together.

sound seemed mostly in the front, very rare back surround effects.
