I saw something on this, more or less because some company wanted to show ads on that day and was getting flack for it. Presumable because the day will be filled with memorials and other special programming. What are your thoughts an the matter?

I think someone has too much time on their hands.

I mean, do they intend to cover up billboards, or expect newspapers to come out without advertising, etc? Certainly, there's a good chance that advertising would be tacky, but isn't that the case all the time?

If stations want to run their 9-11+1 programs with or without advertising, that's their business (literally and figuratively). If businesses want to advertise during it, well, it's their PR hit if they come across as tacky. But why take a time to make a stink about it?
