I recently rented Unforgiven through Netflix and I believe I received the older (non-2 disc special edition) because when I popped the DVD in the player, the pan&scan version began to play. I went to the dvd menu to play the widescreen version but I can't find that option in the menu. does anyone know how to access the widescreen version of the film on this dvd? Even the disc itself says widescreen on the artwork rim, but I can't get it to play that way. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Was this a two-sided disc with P/S on one side and Widescreen on the other side? I never had it so I don't know for sure.

no, it has a grey design on the top side so it only plays on one side. sort of looks like what I believe the special edition disc looks like but from what I can tell the SE doesn't come in P&S so I'm assuming I have the older version. either way, the older disk is supposed to have a widescreen version.

Edgar, as far as I can tell the first release was a flipper (WS on one side, FF on the other). Does the image look vertically streched? Sounds like something might be wrong with your set-up.

Not necessarily. Netflix gets weird versions of discs sometimes. The DVD release of The Butterfly Effect is a flipper with the theatrical cut on one side and the director's cut on the other, but the Netflix version just has the theatrical cut side.

Edgar,

Welcome to the forum!

What's the number on the center? If it is 12531, then it's the first release (the only one still that I own) and it should be a flipper, "Standard Version" on one side and Widescreen Version" (Anamorphic) on the other.

If it's not, perhaps you could ask Netflix about it. Hopefully they have the WS version too.

I think I have a defective disc. On the cover side of the disc, it says something like "Rental Use Only-Not for Resale" so it's probably a special rental retailer version that got messed up. It's supposed to be the SE version but only the old P&S side is on it. Weird.

Thanks for all the help!
