Yes Ben, that's the great man himself, at about age 50. (Efrem Zimbalist was 53 at the time of the photo, his daughter Stephanie just 15 years old)... Quinn Martin, for all his widely known name recognition, was apparently rarely seen in news photos...but the visit to Hoover's FBI Washington D.C. offices was a special occasion...here he is in an older, circa early 1960s, portrait...

And again, later in life...he died in 1987 at age 65...

What a great bunch of faces! You're right, Randall, you just don't see those types of character-filled, craggy actors very much these days...it's all a bunch of good-looking cookie cutter types.

    12 O'Clock High
is yet another classic that I've never seen a second of...it looks a very quality production...something for which the "Q" in QM could easily stand for!

Jeff, as usual, you can sample 12 O' CLOCK HIGH on YouTube. Great stirring theme song!

Efrem Zimbalist was made an Honorary FBI Special Agent, or was it Inspector, by, FBI Director, Robert Mueller, in 2009. This time EZJ was escorted by his grand-daughter, Alexis.

I wish the WAC DVDs of THE F.B.I. had some episodes with those PSA BOLOs, of the Ten Most Wanted. After all, some of them might still be out there.

Great info and pictures Bob! I'm glad that Efrem was getting more honorary recognition from the FBI many years later. Wonderful that his grand daughter accompanied him in 2009, just as her mom, a young Stephanie did in 1972.

There were 3 actual FBI personnel assigned to the QM studios during the production of the series. An Inspector, Ed Kemper, and later on, two Special Agents, Dick Douce and Dick Wolf. Their involvement with the TV series was kept Sub Rosa, as they might say in the agency. Kept quiet because they were, of course, on the public payroll and Hoover didn't want the FBI's allocation of law enforcement assets to a Hollywood TV production to become a political issue. Especially in later years when the agency itself was under fire during the Nixon administration and was itself now somewhat controversial...after all, several ex FBI agents proved to be part of the infamous Watergate "plumbers" burglary. Hoover and the agency also did thorough national security background investigations of all the cast and QM production people...even on all the guest stars as well...(Peter) Mark Richman claimed that his background check included the bureau taking a hair sample from him...to presumably check it against crime scene evidence on file at Quantico...although in the era before DNA forensics, you wonder how effective that would have been in a general sense...unless the bureau had him in mind as a possible suspect in a specific federal case? Ha, ha... Not likely, as good 'ol Mark Richman is a very devout Christian and law abiding guy, now aged 92, and still with his wife that he married in 1953!

QM producer Anthony Spinner is quoted in Jonathan Etter's book on Quinn Martin saying that if they wanted to cast John Vernon or Leslie Nielsen or whoever, they had to wait on the FBI's background checks before finally offering the role and hiring the actors..."if it was something they didn't want, we didn't get the actor"...knowing that beforehand, QM was careful to vet them as best they could beforehand...in the whole run of the series, QM only over ruled the FBI the one time...for singer Nancy Wilson in the season 9 episode The Confession...and of course that was after J. Edgar Hoover had passed away!

Bob, I too wish that the original as aired BOLO segments could have been included on the WAC DVD sets...what a time capsule they would represent...as during the international manhunt for Reverend King's assassin James Earl Ray...and the manhunts for the Weather Underground and Black September/Red Army Terrorists (Carlos "the Jackel")... and other top ten fugitives...

Randall, I wonder if the episode runtimes were shorter on the weeks that had the Ten Most Wanted segments? Now that I think about it, I think those BOLO segments may have been sponsored by Ford, so they would have taken the place of a regular commercial.

I think Alexis was the daughter of Efrem Zimbalist III. But it does echo the earlier visit with Stephanie. I guess at this point in time there could be an Efrem Zimbalist IV and an Efrem Zimbalist V.

I remember J.E. Hoover didn't want the FBI agents in the show wearing colorful or striped shirts. So we have to check post Hoover episodes for more colorful shirts.

IIRC, that's exactly how old he was when he started The Streets of San Francisco for ABC.

TV Guide, January 10, 1967...the debut of The Invaders...interesting to see that the Beatles 1966 Shea stadium concert, or at least excerpts from it, aired in a special hosted by Ed Sullivan the very same night...

Ben, I'm not sure what region, city or state that particular TV Guide came from, as it isn't in my possession. I just shared the image from the QM group on Facebook. I wish I had collected more of these old mags before prices exploded with the advent of Ebay and other such auction sites...what a time capsule of nostalgia they are!

interesting stuff on a long-forgotten actor. Larkin's Saints and Sinners TV show with Nick Adams would make an interesting add to my DVD collection, if it ever saw the light of day. I'm a sucker for movies and TV shows that dip their toe in the field of journalism...

The VEI complete series release of "Cannon" has a lot of negative comments on Amazon from people complaining about the "poor picture quality". I own the set, and I don't understand the griping. Sure, it's not in HD and the shows haven't been restored at all, but the quality is as decent as any rerun you'd see on television. The most positive thing about the set is the episodes being completely uncut, with running times usually around 51 minutes. Highly recommended by me.

Damon - couldn't agree more! It's not a flawless release but I am so glad to have Cannon. It's one of my all-time favorites.

I agree that the Cannon complete series DVD is very good, although in my opinion the 31 disc set is far more preferable compared to the 20 disc set that came out a year later. Thank goodness we got the uncut episodes, unlike the Barnaby Jones set which turned out to be a botch job.

On the Cannon DVD's, I did notice 10 episodes, 1 from season 3, 2 from season 4, and 7 from season 5, that run a little longer than usual and are in the 52 minute range. For whatever reason, it seems that these episodes are playing at a slightly slower than normal speed, but they are uncut which is the important thing.

The oddest thing I have noticed about revisiting "Cannon" after all these years is his weight. When I was a kid in the 1970s, he seemed like a massively obese man, but when I watch the show today he just looks like a regular sized man I see any day of the week. There must have been less overweight people 45 years ago.

I think he weighed less when the show started but put on an extra fifty pounds by the end of the run.
