Just saw this on dvd again and I wondered about something.
Why does ripley actually go back to turn the Bomb off?
Is it only because of the cat? I always found this hard to believe!
Is it because she doesn't think she can make it out in time?
This was never really clear to me, and Ridley Scott doesn't say anything about it the comentary track...

Ripley saw that the Alien had entered the escape shuttle that she was going to use. She hoped that she could stop the Nostromo's destruct and get rid of the Alien by jettisonning the shuttle. When she couldn't stop the destruct she went back to the shuttle, where it looked like the Alien had left, then used the shuttle to escape. Of course, the Alien was still on the shuttle and she had to deal with it anyway.

Ok it just seems like a big risk going into the shuttle anyway..but I guess she doesn't really have a choice since the ship is about to blow up!!
Thanx for clearing that, I think I will watch it agin...even though I've seen it about ten times, great film.

The way I understand those scenes, Ripley first set the main cargo ship to self-destruct, but when she returned to enter the shuttle, the Alien was blocking her path back to it (this is when the Alien is looking at the cat). So Ripley went back to stop the self-destruct, but didn't make it in time. Her only option at this point is to get to the shuttle somehow, so she went back towards the shuttle expecting to see the Alien but it was gone, so the path was clear. Ripley next entered the shuttle, blasted off and watched the cargo ship explode, thinking it killed the Alien. But then she finds out the Alien had also entered the shuttle to find a place to take a nap, etc., etc.

Im very curious about the new DVDs coming out this year. I thought the previous discs were great - what more can they possibly do to them???

    Any info?

    I dont know??
    Alien looks fine to me.
Aliens could use a remaster since the colors look really dated...
Alien 3 in the original Finchers cut would be the main selling point to get me to buy the box again though.
    DTS on all
and Audio commentaries on all, apart from that I don't know.
