Our VB software has an interesting Poll function. This could be of some value in the individual sections to provide some feedback in the running and maintenance of the board. At least I think it could. I'd like to try this out to see how it works and to see if it might have some application here and elsewhere.
Also, once you've "voted" in the mock poll I've created let me know what you think. And, if you so desire, let me know what questions or polls you might think are appropriate for this section by responding in the body of this thread.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting that this be used as a substitute for the "Polls" section of the forum which serves a completely different purpose. This VB poll function is only available to moderators/administrators and should be used, like anything worthwhile, in moderation. It is not my intent to turn the forum into a BBS version of Twenty Questions.

Let's see how this trial balloon goes....
For this first run, I'm going to try a simple, one answer poll. If it flies, I'll try the "multiple choice" option.
Thanks for taking the time to give some input.
    Enjoy!

It might come in handy for a quick survey or something.

It would be useful for allowing people to judge what does and does not work or for what building materials, wiring, equipment, people like.

Good suggestion, Scott. That's the kind of thing I was thinking of. Keep the ideas coming. I'm going to let the poll run until I get, say, 100 votes cast before moving on. I have to get a sense of what kind of response these very simple to use polls generate.

    Stay tuned....

Here's an idea for a poll question related to home theater areas:

(For those with dedicated home theater room)

Was your dedicated home theater room:

    A: Designed by a home theater specialist/consultant

    B: Designed by an architect

    C: Designed by a contractor

    D: Designed by yourself

E: Designed? You mean I was supposed to design it first?

For example, my new room was designed by a home theater consultant. I know of a few others here who went the same route, but it would be interesting to see how people approached their rooms.

I've used Polls such as this on other forums and found it to be an advantage. It's nice to see the standings without having to read and tally all responses.

I can see this being a really nice enhancement to the forum, and possibly a trigger to some great discussions that could really help those planning to build a HT of their own.

For example (piggybacking onto Scott Hayes' idea), perhaps a poll of the best building materials would lead to an engaging and educational discussion of the best procedures for using those materials to construct the HT room. Used that way, the poll could be a great way to uncover best practices from those who have done this type of thing before us.

    Greg,

I like your idea. Since the early tally shows that about 2/3rds of the membership that responded at least likes the idea of polls, I'm going to implement a couple of them to see what develops. Remember, even though the poll is shown at the top of the thread it is also possible (and encouraged) to continue the discussion below the poll in message responses. This ties in nicely with Scott-C's idea for triggering further discussion.

And another feature of these polls can be one that allows multiple answers by the participants. I'm going to test run one of these in a while to show you what that's all about so you can try it out just for fun. This might also give you some ideas of your own that might lead to other discussions.

And remember, my intent is not to make this "poll central" (I really don't have the time for that and a good thing can, of course, be overdone). But, if you have an idea for a poll that you'd like to see implemented, let me know (I prefer e-mail to the private mail here) and I'll post it.

Finally, the beauty of all this is that if polls are not your bag you can choose to ignore all threads that contain them. Nobody is forcing these on you. My role is to moderate and to try to provide enhancements that help the common cause. As a help I'll probably "pin" the polls to the top of the page until I feel they've run their course then I'll unpin them and let them sink into oblivion unless additional people vote and/or respond.

And now that this initial "poll" has apparently run its course I'm going to "unstick" it so that it can float down the message base into purgatory.
Don't want to make this section too "Poll Heavy."
