Man, these Divimax titles are really getting a roasing, and it's more or less understandable: "Digital video to the max!" the high-def system claims. Hmmm, yes.

I'd really like to hear from Anchor Bay on this. Three titles we expected to have optimal presentations, and for the most part, the transfers are great, but there are some weird anomalies: dialogue on Day Of The Dead; dialogue on Manhunter; picture quality on scenes from Manhunter that was previously better; and last but not least: incorrect colours on Halloween where they were previous correct - approved by the film's cinematographer, no less.

Haven't seen Day of the Dead but Manhunter and Halloween Divimax look great.

FYI, if you want the Original theatrical version it is available in R2 France from MGM and soon in R2 Japan from MGM. I've got the French version and have verified all the lines are there. The PQ is very, but not Divimax, good.

No, I wasn't. I've only seen the first half so far, in fact still watching it right now. I think it looks sharper than their last release but not a huge difference.

The answer is that Michael Mann chose what dialogue went into his cut, and he chose what elements were to be used (he sometimes purposely chose video elements for sequences that involved only a single shot unavailable on film).

I'm sure that some purchasers of the earlier release will resent the forced upgrade. Thoughts, anyone?
Well, just to pick a nit: unless a representative from Anchor Bay came to your house or apartment and physically rammed the new disc down your throat and made you wash it down with a quart of milk, I don't think there is such a thing as a "forced upgrade."

I suspect it's not quite as good looking as the remastered Anchor Bay versions (but personally I WANT the true theatrical version!!!)

Well, the film-based portions of the new AB Divimax disc are derived from an HD master created by...MGM. :) Of course, MGM may not have compressed their disc as well as AB or something, but the initial source material should be the same.

Well, if that's really true, then why the hell can't/won't Anchor Bay use MGM's master for the Army of Darkness Director's Cut?!?

Because they weren't aware it even existed until the MGM disc was released. Unfortunately, that was about two weeks before their Boomstick version was released.

I'm sure we'll see ANOTHER AoD disc from AB.
