My daughter is crazy about the Witch Doctor song. You know, oo-ee-oo-aa-aa, ting-tang, walla-walla-bing-bang.

It got me wondering how they did the chipmunks voices. I'm sure they just cranked up the tape speed of normal voices, but how do they get the voices to match the speed of the normal-paced music? Seems like that would be quite an engineering accomplishment, particularly back in the 60's.

When I was a kid we had some chipmonk records and we would slow them down and you could hear that the guy who originally did the voice of Dave was also the chipmonks.

The way they do it is pretty easy, when they record the song, they slow the music down and sing along with it at a slower pace. Then speed it back up to normal for playback.

I always get Dave confused with The Man In The Yellow Hat.

Wow, I haven't Alvin and the 'monks in a LONG time. Do they have a greatest hits album, and is it available on SACD or DVD-Audio?

Actually when you think of how little technology, singing ability, stage presense was required to pull off these early albums, it is a sin how successful David Seville was. Even a no talent like Sonny was able to recognize the ability of Cher and put together a stage show and a tv career.

Jon, I thought you were in the range of Matthew Chimmel, but at 44 - well you young fellows still have a lot of arrogance.
