"I believe in America..."

Michael Moore has been the American Leni Riefenstahl since his very serious documentary, with a comedic flair, Roger & Me, about his attempt to get a sit down with the head of GM, as the area where he grew up was being decimated by the auto maker.

For the past 25 years, he's continued to select topics of high anxiety, and spin them as only he can -- never taking the straight and easy route to a story. And pulling no punches.

With Where to Invade Next, he takes us on a world-wide journey to see how things are done right in other countries, and is welcomed by all.

A terrific documentary, that makes its points beautifully, as lessons are to be learned.

Shot on HD, Anchor Bay's resultant Blu-ray is a perfect representation of the original.

For those unfamiliar, best to pick up Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, and you'll see what you've been missing.

Thanks for the review. Inspired me to pick this up. Where are Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine on blu? I think Fahrenheit 9/11 wins in my experience for "Angriest Crowd in a Movie Theater".

I don't know if he's as good a film maker as Riefenstahl, but they are similar in their fondness for totalitarianism and thugs.

Either you're being facetious, or you meant to say "Fondness for reproaching totalitarianism and thugs."

Leni didn't do much reproaching!!

I think Joe was referencing their shared FASCINATION with totalitarianism and thugs, but I don't want to put words in his mouth.

... and don't forget "SICKO". The BEST documentary about the US Healthcare industry ever done (IMHO). As relevant today as when it was first released. I saw this in a movie theater and at the end there was a 5-minute standing ovation..... something I could not believe.

Due to the subject of this thread, a friendly reminder from your moderating staff as to our "no politics" rule.

4. No politics or religion. We do not permit the discussion of politics or religion at HTF. However, there is a narrow exception to this rule. If the subject matter of a movie or television show includes politics and/or religion, then they may be discussed insofar as they pertain to that specific movie or television show. We stress, however, that such discussions are carefully monitored and will be moderated if it appears that any participant is using this narrow exception to introduce a broader political or religious discussion than is warranted by the movie or television show under discussion. Also, anyone who has not seen a particular movie or television show is disqualified from discussing its political and/or religious content under this rule.

It would be easy for this thread to devolve quickly. If it happens, it will be shut down just as quickly.

Riefenstahl made propaganda, Moore makes anti-propaganda. And that's all I'm going to say about that comparison.

I still remember his infamous Oscar speech back in 2003 and have to say Roger & Me is one of the best documentaries ever made.

I've had posts removed for using political language that were jokes; totalitarianism is a political term, shouldn't it be removed? I'm confused. Help me to understand why some posts are removed, yet some can stay.

This is always the best answer I can ever give to that kind of question, Stanley:

quote-i-shall-not-today-attempt-further-to-define-the-kinds-of-material-pornography-but-i-know-it-potter-stewart-333841.jpg

But this is also not the thread in which to have that discussion (for two reasons).

1.) This is RAH's review thread of Where to Invade Next. Such a discussion would be off-topic.

2.) And, we have another rule:

19. Contacting a moderator. If you have an issue with or complaint against a moderator, raise it privately in an email or private message with the moderator in question. Do not, under any circumstances, raise such issues in public postings.

You see, if we started to explain things and you had follow-up questions, the thread is entirely derailed (just as these last two posts have accomplished). We don't want that.

Please let's take any/all such questions off-line and let this thread remain on-topic. Thanks.

Moore's an incredible filmmaker/communicator, and as much as I love his work, I'm behind on the last couple of films. This will not stand. Thanks to RAH for the words on this one.

Did you mean incredible or irrascible? I always get those two confused. I show Bowling to Columbine to my classes sometimes, with the caveat that it is somewhat manipulative, and not entirely thought through.

I'm not sure this is a good analogy, Robert. Riefenstahl was a rather excellent propaganda documentarian (is that a contradiction in terms?), but there, I think, the similarity ends. While she was at least ostensibly in support of the Third Reich in its promotion of fascism. Michael Moore also has a bias and an agenda, but he is not in specific support of any particular politician or ideology, but is rather a folksy filmmaker who is trying to demand accountability from our government and from corporations which, he quite ably lays out in film after film, are in the business of screwing the lower and middle classes.

I can appreciate that caveat being given, and I recognize that he's a rhetorician (I always want to type or say rhetoritician) as opposed to a documentarian in the strict sense. Imperfections notwithstanding, I nevertheless regard his work as brilliant and filling a void in the realm of demanding accountability that Dick refers to above.

Agreed. I don't mind his anger because of his humour.
