Don Siegel's 1970 Two Mules for Sister Sara is an interesting Clint Eastwood project. As written by Albert Maltz from a story by Budd Boetticher it has a bit of gravitas going in.

The second of his films for Universal, as well as Mr. Siegel, it's a quality affair that a good cut above the standard fare westerns.

Universal has returned to OCN and given us the "international" cut, running 9 minutes longer than the domestic. Kino's new 4k disc is about as perfect as a 55 year-old film is going to appear.

Interestingly, it seems that DP Gabriel Figueroa (The Pearl) - the film was shot in Mexico lends itself beautifully to 4k, but while the two-shots are filtered, the long shots are generally not, and stand out as more highly resolved.

Color, densities, et al are all great.

With more 4k Eastwood films in the offing from Warner Bros., this is a great time to catch up or upgrade.

Another 70mm picture in mono!!

I've never seen this film but know it played in London in 70mm, the expectation being that it was also in 6 track.

The fact that this reissue is in mono suggests that it's another of many that gave the wrong impression, taking advantage of the difficulty in realising that the same sound through multiple speakers is in fact the same sound.

It's far too many years too late to make a fuss about what I have gradually understood to be widespread during the 70mm era.

The DVD was grainy, obviously from less than perfect elements. I streamed in HD from Prime recently & it was an alltogether better experience. Good to know the UHD exceeded expectations!

This was absolutely not photographed in 65mm and some quick internet research says that this wasn't shown in 70mm either.

It was at the Casino Cinerama in London, apparently.
