Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing, which ran on NBC from September 1999 through May of 2006, was one of my all time favorite series. I'm not certain that it created walk and talk sequences - that may have been ER, but it was always intelligent, interesting and incisive.
In today's political climate, it represents a very different time.
With a superb cast, and a constant stream of top segment supporting players, it still - two decades later - beautifully stands the test of time.
From the introduction of characters in the first episode through the final election seven years later, it stands as a pinnacle of quality programming based upon incredible teleplays, acting, direction, cinematography, production design, editing...
The seven season courtesy of WB now comes in a heavy paper box containing two plastic holders - 156 episodes on 28 discs, with more extras than you'll be able to devour in days of viewing. This is the perfect set to program during a huge snow storm.
Sampling the earliest and latest episodes, my eyes are telling me that these are masters that go back awhile. They could easily be twenty years old.
And yet, there are no problems. They're just not new. I was thinking that the titles may have been added to a textless background, but I could be wrong. It's just that they're very sharp and modern looking.
Viewing from a NSD all is well. And in support of the studio, I can easily see clean-up and color, if the series was to be re-worked, heading into seven figures. We're talking 6,716 minutes.
If I were releasing I may have done precisely what has been done here.
One of the greatest TV series of all time.
