Short and sweet.
Warner Bros. has created a magnificent new 4k Blu-ray of Frank Darabont's 1994 The Shawshank Redemption, based on a novel by a then virtually unknown author.
Since the beginning of time, (yes, it was mentioned in The Bible) there have been horrific growing pains with the use of HDR on 4k discs - and that only occurred once the previous problems of the anti-grainers was solved.
Here, the problem of HDR seems to have been solved, with possibly one tiny side note.
What I'm seeing is that (even in projection, meaning less than perfect nit levels) the highlights pop as I've not seen before. Initially, it's in the WB logo (pre-feature), and from then on more restrained.
But I'm loving this representation of the film, overseen by both Mr. Darabont as well as DP Roger Deakins.
If compared to the original Blu-ray, which is included, you'll readily see the difference between an older IP scan and new highly resolved image harvest of the OCN.
My advice?
Do not walk.
Run!
Grab a copy. Especially if you view using a 4k projector.
Beautiful work.
Image – 5
Audio – 5 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)
Pass / Fail – Pass
Plays nicely with projectors - Absolutely
Makes use of and works well in 4k - 5
Very Highly Recommended
