I seldom make note of entities published on paper at HTF, but when something comes along that not only ties in with home theater software, but within the parameters of general interest, I go for it.

Such a project is Nat Segaloff's new book on the Rambo phenomenon.

Five films, three books, one legend.

I was trying to think of characters found in the written word, in film, or in this case - both - that have become an unbelievable world-wide phenomenon.

A situation from which a character becomes a word, and when anyone hears that word, regardless of the reference, they immediately have an image in their mind.

An image so all-encompassing that the word Rambo has established itself throughout media. When someone speaks of a "Rambo effect," you know what they're talking about.

Politics, the arts, literature, cultures of many nations - a simple word referencing a character first found in David Morrell's novel First Blood - is immediately understood.

Mr. Segaloff has researched the subject - the books, the films, the games, the lunchboxes...

All of the background as to how each film came to be.

All of the background on collectible Rambo knives for which prices are up. I never realized they were true collectibles that traded for major dollars.

And the end result gave me an understanding of the character that I'd not thus far had. I've read the books, seen the films - never had the lunchbox - but I now have a very clear understanding of why the character exists, his source, and precisely how he was molded.

As noted, I don't generally reference books, but this one fits so perfectly into our world of film that I felt it imperative to bring it to readership's attention.

The Rambo Report is available in hard cover, audio CD, and Kindle.

To the best of my knowledge, no Steelbook release at this time.

Well written, and vetted by Rambo's creator, Mr. Morrell. It's a seriously researched project.

When David Morrell joined Home Theater Forum a few years ago,
I thought it was going to be great to hear some of his knowledge about the filming of Rambo, and more.

Unfortunately he must not have liked it here because he left as quickly as he joined.

Maybe he'll come back if the remastered UHD of Rambo: First Blood Part II with the theatrical 6-track mix is ever released.

I believe when he joined, he was in the midst of writing a new novel. I believe what you’re seeking can be found in Mr. Segaloff’s new book.

If there’s a reason for Mr. Morrell to check in here, I’m sure he will. He’s just exceedingly busy.

Thank you. I will get the book. One of the many points of interest for me is the “Rambo Knife” which my friends and I were crazy about at the time. You could buy them anywhere, Gas stations, flea markets, hardware stores etc.

Looking back now…what were three 11 year old kids going to do with them? A six inch blade with a serrated edge, that had a nice compass, fishing hooks, line, and matches stored neatly in the handle. I guess it was fun to make believe we would live off the land if there was a nuclear war.

And the bigger question still….how the hell did our mothers let us purchase these? The same moms that used to get nervous if we were late for dinner.

I believe he was writing a new novel at the time and just stopped in.

I've been here all along. I look at HTF every day. Fascinating articles and comments. Sometimes I comment. I guess I should be doing more of it. I love this site and my good friend Bob Harris. We've known each other since the 1990s.

David Morrell here. I visit HTF every day. Sometimes I leave comments. Maybe not enough. Sorry to seem a stranger. I love HTF and my good friend Bob Harris, whom I've known since the 1990s.

When I wrote my Rambo novelizations, I had the chance to speak with knifemakers Jimmy Lile and Gil Hibben. Gil became a friend. They were inspired to become knife makers because of the knife for the 1952 Alan Ladd movie THE IRON MISTRESS. In their turn, they inspired later knifemakers. (David Morrell)

These moves are no highly prized and collectible. Are they not? Are you able to post images of your examples?

I hope he didn't skimp out on coverage of the weekday after-school cartoon. Truly the pinnacle of Rambomania.

David Morrell here. Yep, the Rambo cartoon series is included. The knives. Jerry Goldsmith. Nat's book is all-things Rambo, including the dramatic backstories to the movies. He allowed me to read his drafts for historical accuracy.
