I seldom make note of entities published on paper at HTF, but when something comes along that not only ties in with home theater software, but within the parameters of general interest, I go for it.
Such a project is Nat Segaloff's new book on the Rambo phenomenon.
Five films, three books, one legend.
I was trying to think of characters found in the written word, in film, or in this case - both - that have become an unbelievable world-wide phenomenon.
A situation from which a character becomes a word, and when anyone hears that word, regardless of the reference, they immediately have an image in their mind.
An image so all-encompassing that the word Rambo has established itself throughout media. When someone speaks of a "Rambo effect," you know what they're talking about.
Politics, the arts, literature, cultures of many nations - a simple word referencing a character first found in David Morrell's novel First Blood - is immediately understood.
Mr. Segaloff has researched the subject - the books, the films, the games, the lunchboxes...
All of the background as to how each film came to be.
All of the background on collectible Rambo knives for which prices are up. I never realized they were true collectibles that traded for major dollars.
And the end result gave me an understanding of the character that I'd not thus far had. I've read the books, seen the films - never had the lunchbox - but I now have a very clear understanding of why the character exists, his source, and precisely how he was molded.
As noted, I don't generally reference books, but this one fits so perfectly into our world of film that I felt it imperative to bring it to readership's attention.
The Rambo Report is available in hard cover, audio CD, and Kindle.
To the best of my knowledge, no Steelbook release at this time.
Well written, and vetted by Rambo's creator, Mr. Morrell. It's a seriously researched project.
