With a great leading cast - William Holden and Deborah Kerr - VistaVision and the gorgeous environs of St. Thomas, one can only wonder why The Proud and Profane wasn't shot in Eastman Color, to be printed in dye transfer.
Might it have been an attempt by the studio to cash in on the earlier Academy award-winning From Here to Eternity, which proved that films in black & white could still win awards?
Regardless, TPaP is a quality film that neatly ducks the relationship details of the leads to steer clear of censorship.
Directed by George Seaton (his first VVLA project) and shot by John Warren (The Ten Commandments, The Country Girl), Kino's new Blu-ray courtesy of Paramount looks absolutely glorious in 2k.
A worthwhile way to spend a couple of hours in the company of VistaVision.
Look for Marion Ross in an early roll, and Robert Morse as an extra.
