Those who have seen The Pirate, M-G-M’s Arthur Freed / Vincente Minnelli phantasmagorical three-strip Technicolored entertainment, can tell you of its wonders.

Seeing the new Warner Archive Blu-ray, I can attest to the fact that those colors are back in their proper places – a testament to the technology.

Is the new Blu-ray perfection?

Pretty much.

I only noted a handful of shots that had minor registration issues at the far left side of the frame, but as we’re now seeing it far more highly resolved than it was in 1948, those minor idiosyncrasies may have been there from day one.

M-G-M stalwarts Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. A commentary by John Fricke, song outtakes, a stereo version of Mack the Black and more.

A magnificent new Blu-ray of one of the most colorful dye transfer productions – ever.

For the record, there were 51 Technicolor productions in 1948, 14 from M-G-M, this being one of the most important.

Pass / Fail – Pass

Upgrade from DVD – Yes!

Highly Recommended

“The Pirate” isn’t going to be a Day One purchase for me; mainly because I foresee a very healthy back-order will be at hand. And that, my friends, is one of the many reasons as to why they invented a thing called the Pre-Order.:thumbs-up-smiley:

I still don't get why this movie was a flop. Or even a disappointment. What put audiences off at at the time? Though extremely lavish it is no more sophisticated than any of the Comden/Green musicals. The story is a lot of fun and everybody is at their best.

I was uncertain because all it does is bring me to the Amazon page I would normally buy it from.
