Jon Turteltaub's The Meg, is Jaws on steroids, with many an homage to the earlier production.

An American / Chinese co-production, with a cast represented by both countries.

Great fun, reasonably believable, with top of the line effects.

The 4k Blu is derived from a 2k DI, but I could have sworn that I was seeing pure 4k data. It's that good.

Audio is likewise, superb, presented in Dolby Atmos.

Image - 5

Audio - 5 (Dolby Atmos)

Pass / Fail - Pass

Hmmm. I can get this in 3D. Is it worth the purchase?

I mostly enjoyed it, and have the 3D pre-ordered.

I cannot speak to the 3D quality, as I saw it flat in the theater.

I just watched the 4K disc and thought it mostly looked great.

BUT... I found that the HDR jacked up the white levels during daytime exteriors. Skies lacked any blue - they're just white - and characters faces threatened to get washed out due to the HDR.

The rest of the image really did look terrific, but the "set to 11" white levels turned into a distraction.

The Blu-ray offered better white balance and didn't show any signs of this issue...

Just imagine if the Meg itself was pure, snow white, as in the novel. They changed the color to more like a great white shark in the movie.

I think that was one of the book's tag lines, something like: "If you can see her glow, it's too late."

Streamed this one Saturday. Wow what a stinker, but if you are the kind of viewer who like completely MINDLESS popcorn flix, this is probably right up your alley.. Now my youngest thought it was awesome, but he's 10.

I'd give this one a 1 out of 10. Definitely not worth purchasing.

I watched this a few weeks ago.

I'm already having a hard time remembering any of it.

The biggest let-down--even for those of us just wanting to enjoy a mindless popcorn-flick--is that there weren't even any memorable reveals of the monster (except maybe for...)

...that moment where they had the shark hoisted on the boat and the 2nd meg makes its surprise appearance.

I agree. Completely forgettable, I also found all the actors very unappealing and wooden.

As for the spoiler, the minute I saw that scene open up I knew exactly what was about to happen. So predictable.

Yeah, I reckon it'll be a bit of a disappointment, but I still fancy seeing it (it's The Stath!). My answer is to wait until the Blu-ray dips below £7 (I don't mind s/hand), then I can enjoy it (or not) & then pass it on to a charity shop.

I don't get his appeal AT ALL. He was one of the worst parts of this movie,

 I "get" his appeal. If it wasn't for him, those "Transporter" movies probably would have been long forgotten.

But, I agree with Johnny. Statham never once pulled me into this film. It was like he phoned it in.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty much a stink bomb as well. Statham is always wooden, so I wasn't expecting anything more from him. Li Bingbing, however, was absolutely God-awful! I don't know if it was the language barrier or if she is just sucks at acting, but every single scene she was in gave me that nails-on-a-chalkboard feeling. Ugh.

For me though, the biggest problem with this film were the effects. There were a few good moments, but all-in-all the shark looked horrible. It's hard to suspend disbelief about a huge, prehistoric Megalodon when it looks like it came straight out of Babylon 5's Video Toaster rendering farm.

This film needs to be seen in 3D which makes it way more fun.

It’s a dud in 2D.

As believable as a giant Megladon shark can be I guess. :D
Exactly. There are no pics of an actual Meg, so I'm not sure how anyone can say it looked horrible. It looks like a giant shark to me.

I guess I don't understand what people are looking for in FX. Every time someone is critical of FX in a film, it usually looks fine to me.

People are looking for suspension of disbelief. That's the whole point of a special effect like this - to make the audience believe that it's real. Of course, we know it ISN'T real, but we want to be fooled all the same. It's hard to care about anyone on-screen if you think they're being attacked and eaten by nothing more than a bunch of poorly animated pixels.
