The Lonely Man is a Paramount western, directed by Henry Levin, and released in the summer of 1957.

With a cast of very familiar faces - Neville Brand, Robert Middleton, Elisha Cook, Jr., Claude Akins, and Lee Van Cleef (before Italy), and headlined by Jack Palance and Anthony Perkins, it may have been forgotten had it not been photographed in VistaVision.

VVLA is a very big deal here. And even more unusual is the combination of VVLA and black & white cinematography. While I'm not suggesting that it's a rara avis, it is unusual. The Desperate Hours (1955) was the first.

Paramount's image harvest from the 35/8 OCN is magnificent on all levels, and makes The Lonely Man very much worth seeing as an odd father / son drama.

Released the same year as another excellent B&W VistaVision Western, The Tin Star. I'll be picking this one up. Levin has quite the filmography, including one of my all-time favorites, Journey to the Center of the Earth from 1959. He was a prolific director.

05) 03-02-25: "The Lonely Man" (1957) (Blu-ray) 4/5 Stars
With this 2024 Kino Blu-ray release, it definitely compares favorably with any Warner Archive Blu-ray release. The video presentation of this black and white VistaVision film is excellent and offers a pristine picture. This 1956 western was released in 1957, just five months before another 1957 Paramount black and white VistaVision western "The Tin Star". Both films have three of the same actors in it. Anthony Perkins, Neville Brand and Lee Van Cleef in which they probably filmed the two movies back-to-back in 1956. The movie is about a deadly gunslinger/Jack Palance that comes back home to retrieve his bitter son/Anthony Perkins. However, the son hates his father and blames him for his mother's suicide. Complicating matters are former criminal partners of the gunslinger/Neville Brand, Claude Akins/Robert Middleton out for revenge. Furthermore, the gunslinger has a serious health issue so he's running out of time to properly set up his son in a proper and lawful business before it's too late. IMO, I always thought this was a fine western, though, not quite as good as "The Tin Star" but still a very good movie with some impressive acting performances.
