As noted with Killer's Kiss (also from Kino) The Killing is another odd 4k choice for release. Nothing negative here, as it's a beautiful image harvest, but I'm not seeing the necessity, when a 2k would suffice.
Yes, blacks are a bit more intense, but still...
The Killing, a 1956 production, was hot in about three weeks, beginning in November of 1955. Additional dialogue by Jim Thompson.
The Killing was Mr. Kubrick's third feature production, after which he would hit a wider stage with the 1957 Paths of Glory, also coming soon to 4k.
Photographed by the great Lucian Ballard in stark black and white, it's a film that (possibly aside from narration) holds up beautifully today.
Sterling Hayden would appear later in Dr. Strangelove. Did he ever appear in a color film?
Kino's new release is sharp down to the individual grain, but seated at a nominal distance, those bit disappear.
Offered in 1.66, everything works nicely.
This is a lovely Kino release, with nary a problem in sight.
Image – 5 (Dolby Vision)
Audio – 5
Pass / Fail – Pass
Plays nicely with projectors - Yes
Makes use of and works well in 4k - 3.75
Highly Recommended
