Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chance...
Buying 4k UHD product based upon Paramount transfers seems akin to visiting an old carnival and seeing the freak show or spinning that wheel of chance.
I'll be nicer.
"It's like a box of chocolates."
Viewing Death wish just before sampling The Italian Job was night and day - two 4k releases that could not be further different from one another in terms of overall appearance - and most important, use of the concept of what should be a 4k UHD release.
It not that Death Wish was bad. It's not. The problem is that one is viewing a 4k UHD disc that looks like Blu-ray with a bit of HDR added.
The Italian Job has everything that one might wish from a late '60s color production. A stable well-timed image, pleasant grain (real or imagined) and an overall filmic appearance.
One thing that jumped off the screen was the brilliant scarlet lettering of the main title sequence. Whether it was hyped or not via color or Dolby Vision I've no idea, but it was a knock-out.
As a film, The Italian Job doesn't stand that test of time we often discuss. Reality is that it wasn't very special when it opened in October of 1969 - at least in New York, on a double bill with Ace High, an Italian western.
Michael Caine has the lead, while an aging Noel Coward is the brains behind the operation, controlling eveything from prison.
Personally, I've always felt that F. Gary Gray's 2003 re-make is a far superior film - a wonderful caper story that seems to exist for the fun of it. Think the Oceans films.
Image - 5 (Dolby Vision)
Audio – 5 (DTS-HD MA)
Pass / Fail – Pass
Plays nicely with projectors - Yes
Makes use of and works well in 4k - 4
Upgrade from Blu-ray - Yes
