As some fine filmmakers are known to have done, Charles Frend began his career as a film editor, working with Hitchcock on a number of his UK productions, as well as with M-G-M UK, before making the move to directing in 1942.

As far as I'm aware, he never left the UK.

For those with a bit of background in UK cinema, some of his works are Scot of the Antarctic (1948 - Technicolor), The Third Key (1956). He also served as second unit director for David Lean (a fellow editor) on Ryan's Daughter.

The Cruel Sea is one of a handful of films that told of the WWII era in a dark and unflinching manner. I saw it as one of my first "adult" (I was seven) film adventures. It holds its power to this day.

Taken from a superb film element, and beautifully handled, one could not ask for a better representation of this film.

Great British war movie. Recently watched 'Ice Cold in Alex', another favorite WWII movie of mine. The Dam Busters is another classic- the bluray was released by StudioCanal in the UK under their Vintage Classics line so hopefully may get a 4K release one day.
