The Blair Witch Project, directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez is one of those "little engine that could" films.

Created on a shoe-string budget, shooting Hi-8 video and 16mm, it's had a world-wide gross of some 250 million dollars.

And created an entirely new genre.

But reportedly, the actors and filmmakers never shared in the income. If this has changed, it would be interesting to know about it.

Back in 1999, it would have been extremely difficult to do a wide release of a horror film projecting standard definition video and 16mm, so the final elements were uprezzed to 35 - and not in the best ways - and the original home video release (was it Artisan DVD?) never looked even decent.

Second Sight Films has gone back to the original elements and created a new digital master that Finally allows the film to look as it should.

Now the confusion. There is also a new Imprint release Blu-ray of both the original and second film, but the only one that has the newly remastered version is from Second Sight.

And this is a very big deal.

If this is correct, one could easily order the wrong product.

The Second Sight is an import, so it's Region B only, and it comes in two variants - a boxed set with all sorts of extra materials, as well as a standard edition in a very attractive smoked gray case, containing the two discs. Both can be ordered directly from Amazon domestic.

This is in no way an incremental upgrade. It's akin to seeing and hearing the real thing for the first time.

Now if we can get the filmmakers some dividends on their labours.

After the movie, stick around for the bonus features, which are some of the best I've seen in a long time. The bonus disc should be the same on both the swag and the swag-free releases.

Should have noted. Commentaries, 90 minutes of Hi-8 footage, plus more 16mm. A veritable cornucopia of extras.

Beautifully done by Second Sight!

I had preordered this and just got it in the mail this week. I had a nagging suspicion that it could be a Region B. Now to research how to actually watch it.

As someone who got to work in a couple zero-budget horror projects back in the day, I can appreciate what the filmmakers accomplished and I still find it compelling to watch.

You can try to use the "Top Menu" hack.

Put the disc in a blu-ray (or 4K blu-ray) player
Press Play - get the "This won't play in this Region ..." nag screen
Press Stop
Press Top Menu (you may need to do this more than one time) - you may get access to the main menu.

Or if you have a Windows computer with a blu-ray player you may be able to change the region code up to 5 times.

VLC Media Player should be able to play the disc if your computer can access it ...

Thanks. I have a Panasonic UB820 in the living room that I can try. I also have a USB BD player as another option.

A Pana UB820 should indeed handle this trick.

On a side note, there will be a replacement program from Second Sight, because the Theatrical Cut soundtrack plays as dual mono while it should be stereo.

My copy did not have a "This disc won't play in this region" message screen: it didn't even start playing. I pressed the Top Menu button, and it started right up :thumbs-up-smiley:. (Also using the UB820)

Confirmed, this worked for me as well!
Also, requested my replacement disc. Thanks all.
