The Blair Witch Project, directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez is one of those "little engine that could" films.
Created on a shoe-string budget, shooting Hi-8 video and 16mm, it's had a world-wide gross of some 250 million dollars.
And created an entirely new genre.
But reportedly, the actors and filmmakers never shared in the income. If this has changed, it would be interesting to know about it.
Back in 1999, it would have been extremely difficult to do a wide release of a horror film projecting standard definition video and 16mm, so the final elements were uprezzed to 35 - and not in the best ways - and the original home video release (was it Artisan DVD?) never looked even decent.
Second Sight Films has gone back to the original elements and created a new digital master that Finally allows the film to look as it should.
Now the confusion. There is also a new Imprint release Blu-ray of both the original and second film, but the only one that has the newly remastered version is from Second Sight.
And this is a very big deal.
If this is correct, one could easily order the wrong product.
The Second Sight is an import, so it's Region B only, and it comes in two variants - a boxed set with all sorts of extra materials, as well as a standard edition in a very attractive smoked gray case, containing the two discs. Both can be ordered directly from Amazon domestic.
This is in no way an incremental upgrade. It's akin to seeing and hearing the real thing for the first time.
Now if we can get the filmmakers some dividends on their labours.
