Robert Benton's Still of the Night is an interesting film, and a good one, but never great.

Roy Scheider and Meryl Streep are the linchpins to this Hitchcockish thriller which has made its way to Blu-ray from MGM, via Kino Lorber.

SotN is a good-looking Blu-ray, which does a nice job of reproducing  the totalities brought to film by the great Nestor Almendros.  There are subtleties of the color palette without ever seemingly reaching true black, which I presume is as intended.

MGM transfers seem to have their share of anomalies, and Still of the Night is no exception.  Here, it's splice bumps, which distort frames at cuts.  Unfortunately, they seem to come at final frames, which are far more noticeable then a first frame.

Some viewers may not notice the problem, but it must be reported.

The film looks fine. I saw it theatrically in 1982, and came away ambivalent. I think highly of both Streep and Scheider, but found the film a bit off-putting -- a bit cold with its not very sympathetic characters. If you really need to compare this to Hitchcock, you will be disappointed. On its own terms, it's odd but interesting. The dream sequences come off best for me, and really feel dreamy and disturbing. This Blu-ray is more than acceptable, and I hope that watching it a few more times will warm me to it in time. I admire Robert Benton's work on his (very few) movies, and this has always seemed like the ugly duckling of his filmography, but mediocre Benton is superior to the "best" of, say, Michael Bay. Let's have THE LATE SHOW!! :)
