Never been a fan of Mr. Carpernter's Starman, but no matter - sampling Columbia's new 4k UHD, I came away thrilled for all those who are.

I never saw the film, but have always been a fan of Bridges (and Allen for that matter).

It’s been called a grown-up ET, and I think that’s fair. I’ve always liked it. It’s a change of pace for Carpenter but it’s one of my favorite things he’s done.

If Frank Capra had decided to do an alien SciFi film this would be it, imo.

Also, story of Jesus if you want to go there.

This and Memoirs of an Invisible Man are the only two Romantic Comedies his ever done (unless you count Big Trouble...).

Starman kind of gets lost in the shuffle with Carpenter's more signature horror-centric fare, but it's a lovely film. His films are always a showcase for exceptional Panavision compositions, but it's incredible how expansive everything looks here. I already have the film via the Columbia Classics box it's in (Vol 3?) but I would have happily picked this up otherwise.

But in a very, very weird and multilayered way, with both Starman and his prophesied son serving as Jesus figures (while Starman also serves as a father God figure as well). I'll quote from my own review on that score:

"Intentionally or not, there’s some weirdly multilayered Christological typology going on in Starman (spoilers follow, so caveat emptor). The film opens with Starman’s spirit moving across the waters to create a new Adam out of the dust of a hair sample from the old one (hey, at least it wasn’t a rib). When he uses this body to impregnate Jenny Hayden later in the film, it’s not exactly going to result in a virgin birth, but the fact that she was previously barren places it into a similarly miraculous category. Their offspring will still be both Son of Man via a human mother, and son of a celestial god through supernatural means. Starman also prophecies to her that their son will be a teacher, and that he’ll be one with his father, since he’ll possess all the knowledge that his father did. While Starman himself could be seen as a type of Christ in some respects, it’s really his unseen son who will end up fulfilling that role—after all, Starman makes it clear that he’s not going to return via a second coming, although the developers of the later television series clearly had different ideas."
