Phil Alden Robinson's 1992 caper movie Sneakers is a big budget production with some great talent that should have been a far better film.

Great cast. A proven filmmaker. All the elements are in place.

Kino's new 4k UHD from Universal is a superbly crafted 4k release that looks like film, with no problems in sight.

Spending two hours with Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier and David Strahairn is worthwhile, and yet one wonders if there might not have been an ever better experience.

It may not be an award-caliber masterpiece, but I've always found the film to be a fun, lighthearted caper.

I assume your review suggests that the 4K corrects the brightness problem from the prior Blu-ray transfer, which was far too dark?

Wonderful film that nails its tone perfectly. A tad underappreciated, clearly, but not as much so as Robinson's genuinely underrated The Sum of All Fears, which even the author didn't like (although as time has gone on, that's less of a knock against the movie than it originally sounded). But that movie had some genuinely tough needles to thread, while Sneakers is just an enjoyably tongue-in-cheek homage to the paranoia thrillers of the Seventies.
