Harold Becker is a quality filmmaker. He's directed some terrific work, and Sea of Love from 1989 is a quality thriller.

Brought to 4k UHD by Kino via Universal, this is a release that looks comfortably film-like, down to the soft dupes in the opening.

Well worth the two hours to view for those who've not seen it. And always loved the NY Yankees opening.

Color, densities, grain structure all in line with where one would expect them to be.

Always enjoyed this one since first renting it on VHS upon the initial release. Owned it on DVD and BD. Pre-ordered the UHD.

Saw it when it came out and remembered very little, but I've always thought it needed a revisit.

I always liked Sea of Love. It was kind of Al Pacino's comeback after a few poorly received movies in the 80s (Revolution, anyone?). I saw it when it came to theaters, and again in the 90s. I saw it more recently on blu-ray and I think it holds up. It's a fairly standard thriller but Pacino elevates it. It kind of got Pacino working regularly again, with films like Dick Tracy, Frankie and Johnny and Scent of a Woman up next (and of course, Godfather III).

BTW, he talks about this film and many of his others in his book, Sonny Boy, which I am currently reading. He's pretty honest, and talks about taking projects because he was broke (which happened more than once). One of the passages I enjoyed was about Francis Coppola forcing Pacino to have lunch with Brando on the set of the Godfather. It was in the hospital room where Michael visits Vito. Pacino said Brando didn't have a napkin, so he wiped his hands, which were full of red sauce, all over the white sheets of the bed.

It’s good to see this film make its way back into the sunlight. I was 15 years old when I saw this in the theater. I had just seen The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, I snuck into the theater to see some new Pacino magic.

Classic. Pacino returning to the screen after a brief hiatus in the 80’s.

He returned in ‘89 with a vengeance.

But in his performance here as Frank, I always felt he had reset and found his footing again, because I loved his performance in this movie.

And then there was Dick, Tracy, and The Godfather part three

Scent of a woman

Heat

All within six years of this movie

Especially if you have not seen it, give this one a shot

Three years later, he would win the statue for “Scent of a Woman”, 1992.

And agreed, classic Yankee’s opening scene. Love it.
