What an unusual occurrence to find a 1949 Nitrate Republic, with an image harvest from the OCN, released in 4k.
It seems that Paramount has been methodically going through their inherited holdings - the Roy Rogers color films have been past recipients of the care - and actually making them available.
Shot by Reggie Lanning, whose credits go back to 1924, directed by Allan Dwan, who began directing in 1911, and with a score by Victor Young - it's a film that had four Academy Award nominations in 1950.
Much of the film was shot on location at Camp Pendleton, Malibu and the Channel Islands, putting cast and crew in harms way in order to achieve the look the filmmakers demanded.
Kino's new 4k is a rara avis, in that we seldom get to see 4k derived from Nitrate, so hats off to both Kino and Paramount for making this available.
Did I mention that it's a John Wayne film?
A magnificent disc.
