John Dahl's 1993 Red Rock West is an extremely odd thriller that seems to have fallen through the cracks. And that's a pity, as it's a fun film.

Vinegar Syndrome via cinematographe has brought it back in very nice form on Blu-ray, and it's expensive.

A rarity in film restoration, the film has been meticulously saved from what may be the only extant film element, an IP. The OCN must be long gone. But that happens with extremely old productions, so it's understandable.

In an Out of the Blue type situation, I've heard that over 1.2 million was spent saving this one, so hat's off to VS.

The image looks just fine, with nice colors, and a normal grain structure. Had I not be told it was a restoration, I might have been fooled into thinking it was from the long gone OCN. But we'll thank VS for taking this project in hand and doing a new 4k scan of what one should presume was an IP with not much image left.

Nice film, and for those who've not seen it, a treat. Acting works except for some bits, but it's good time.

I only vaguely recall seeing this movie way back when. Along with 5-6 other new VS titles, I invested in a purchase of it several months ago, anticipating doing reviews, but that didn't happen. I'm glad to hear it looks better than expected. It's definitely a super premium package. I really need to sit down and watch it.

Thanks for the review. Looking forward to revisiting it.

Very happy to see this. Grateful, even, because I missed any announcement of it. Kind of sorry to have missed the limited edition on this one, but I looked on eBay and I'm not THAT sorry.

Thankful for these $1.2 million restorations, too. (Yes, I grabbed Out of the Blue.) Not that I keep tabs on what these things cost, but $1.2 sounds respectful indeed.

I have it, also got it a while ago, it is a really good picture. Looks fantastic on this release, I had another Blu of it, from Germany I think, and this wipes the floor with that release. If you enjoy noir, Nick Cage, or know who Mr. Dahl is...a must own. Do not hesitate.

I've seen it but once, back in the laserdisc days. Rented it. Loved it. And it's been mostly out of mind since, not through any fault of its own.

I'm continually amazed to find films only going back to the 1990s that have literally been saved by a hair.

Some restorations are topping the 50 million mark!

This is one of my favorite films of the 90's. I believe it was one of Gene Siskel's too. I was happy about that because it wasn't getting much attention back then, but when it went on his "best of the year" list, then it raised a few eyebrows.

Such great performances from Nicholas Cage, and Dennis Hopper.

Here is the original review from Siskel, and Ebert at the beginning of the program:

I went to see it because of this review. On a side note, I hate how they put the living room frame around the video.

Back to school for me!
The teachers always said I had $50m tastes on a $1.2m budget.
And consider man/woman hours. It was leaked recently that the restoration of Out of the Blue - a fan-funded enterprise - brought in almost 100 million dollars and involved over 800,000 hours of delicate film element handling - much of it performed by nuns in the Black Forest!

It was only after all this work was done, that Roundabout Entertainment in Burbank was able to achieve perfect results from their 4k scans. Hundreds of other major projects had to be pushed to the sides, as the delicate scans - at over 8 minutes per frame - could occur.

A massive undertaking.

It arrived, I put it in to check it out for a moment, and next thing I knew I'd watched the whole movie, hooked from the first scene. I'd forgotten all of the ends and outs of the script. Look forward to watching again soon with full knowledge of what's what. What a pleasure, rediscovering - and discovering, within weeks of each other - two fabulous Dennis Hopper films. And I think this looks - and sounds - absolutely great.

I watched this film for the first time yesterday.
I had a great time watching it. Presentable on BluRay.
