Michael Ritchie's over half century old Prime Cut was a bit of a shocker when it arrived in 1972, and still works today as an example of sunlit noir.

By today's standards the badder guy, played by Gene Hackman isn't really doing anything terribly wrong. He runs a meat packing facility in Kansas City, with some side businesses involving murder, drugs, prostitution and human trafficking. The fact that his group is also training pre-teens to take over shouldn't be a problem. At least he's honest about it all. So that's fine.

Lee Marvin vs Mr. Hackman is quite a pair-up. Fun action noir, and I've always loved Mr. Hackman's character's name - Mary Ann.

Sissy Spacek's debut.

Beautiful image harvest from the OCN that faithfully reproduces the look of a 35mm print. Everything is perfect in this Paramount master released via Kino

Thank you for your review as I'm looking forward to revisiting this fine crime drama. This 4K/UHD release should be a significant improvement over the 2014 German Blu-ray in my film library.

That's the one I have too. After ten years, I don't mind the double dip to a higher res format.

Which is how I saw it at a MoMA screening.
I don't remember it ever playing at MOMA. I saw it at the New Amsterdam, among those decaying gilded columns. Not sure what Flo would have thought. The audience was very responsive, which added to the ambience. No one pulled a knife on anyone though, which happened during Boxcar Bertha.

It was during one of those series dedicated to give overlooked films a second chance. I forget the name of the series. For a while it was an almost annual event.

Ah, it was a few years later. I saw it the day it opened. Even in that grindhouse, the creased and stained screen with the silver finish coming off in streaks, the images gleamed. It was so resplendent, I was under the impression it was photographed by Conrad Hall, but it was actually Gene Polito, son of Sol Polito, the ace DP at Warner's in the 30's & 40's.

I have the KL Blu-Ray released a few years ago.

I thought that looked pretty good, but being such a Gene Hackman fan I may have to double dip.

I finally watched my 4K/UHD today and it's a huge improvement over that 2014 Blu-ray. I concur with most of RAH's review. Such a fine 4K/UHD that I will watch again in the near future in order to listen to at least one of those two audio commentaries.

This is one of those movies that is always worth a rewatch. Ritchie was on fire in the early 70s, and it's too bad not many people were catching on.

I agree. Prime Cut is quite relevant. His films have aged really well. Sneakily perceptive and stealth-like in hitting its targets. I also feel George Roy Hill's Slap Shot is the best Michael Ritchie movie not directed by Michael Ritchie.
