Properly rabid Hammer fans will know the name Freddie Francis.
Originally a camera operator, moved to DP in 1956, and was responsible for some of the great British films of the 60s - think The Innocents.
He moved to directing in 1962, and helmed Paranoiac! the that year. It was released in the U.S. in '63.
Among the Hammer films for which he served in that capacity were The Evil of Frankenstein, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave.
The screenplay comes from Hammer stalwart Jimmy Sangster.
Scream Factory's new Blu-ray of the film, via Universal appears to be derived from a fine grain (noted as an "interpositive" on the jacket. With few exceptions the black and white imagery is handsome, with nice gray scale and and proper grain structure. It should be noted that there are occasional (very minor) cut through scratches - presumedly from dry-gate manufacture of the scanned element.
Hopefully, Scream will send more Hammer productions our way.
