I previously bought it on iTunes but mine will not upgrade. Frustrating.
Yes this is one of the rare titles where one must buy a new copy if you want the 4K - at least for now. This two version status almost always ends after a while, leaving everyone upgraded to 4K. Sometimes this can take many months though - up to a year.

It is disappointing, especially for anyone who bought the HD recently for the purpose of the upgrade. Fortunately these are rare occurrences.

Indeed it would and that is also not how Dolby Vision is supposed to be implemented. I will try to get a rental of the Paramount disc in order to compare Dolby Vision vs HDR10.
It just dropped to $8 on iTunes, so I got that instead of the disc.

Wonder if the 4K digital will have the same issue, if that's indeed the case...

I've been on the fence about buying this, due to the controversy. I actually didn't realize that I already owned the prior Blu-ray. It turns out I do. That being the case, I may just give that a spin and see how I feel it holds up before investing in another copy. At the very least, I'll probably hold out and hope for a price drop in the future.

I'm late to respond to this, but as the guy who will not buy any of the new James Cameron UHDs, hells yeah I'm buying this one.

True. I won't even mention how much I paid for the 4K of Invaders from Mars.
It was pricy indeed, but I had to have it IMMEDIATELY and it came with a cool button.

I spent about 45 minutes switching between the UHD's HDR10 to the Dolby Vision presentations over the last few nights. In brief, the visible compression differences were insignificant. The average extra ~9 mbps FEL stream alleviates some compression artifacts in the HDR10 base layer, but I barely noticed the improvements even with pixel peeping, and the extra bits did not materially alter the texture of the presentation. On my display, which maxes out at about 800 nits, the Dolby Vision presentation mainly distinguished itself with improved tone mapping and highlight detail retention from the RPU dynamic metadata.

I found these screenshot comparisons representative of the differences between the DV and HDR10 presentations: https://slow.pics/c/VGWRJ74x

Most importantly, I remain impressed and satisfied with this release.

For those interested, here are graphs of the data rates for the base layer and FEL.

Would you be able to make a comparison between the HDR+DV captures and the corresponding restored BD frames ?

Finally got around to watching the UHD last night. I thought it looked fine, but after a while I was having a hard time keeping my eyes open: I'd forgotten how slow-paced this movie is. Definitely not an ideal choice to watch at the end of a long day. I'll have to revisit when I'm more awake.
