For those fortunate enough to see Mank, you'll have some concept of who Marion Davies was, and why she found herself in oversized productions.
Lights of Old Broadway fits this bill perfectly.
Directed by Monta Bell, and edited by Blanche Sewell (look her up), it's a technical marvel using multiple photographic techniques, which are sometimes inter-cut shot by shot, or in short sequences.
While the majority of the film is presented via it's black and white nitrate roots, you'll also find various tints, some shots via the Handschiegl process (which was stenciled), all capped with sequences in two-color Technicolor.
Something to keep in mind is that as these prints were created, different sections were struck, sorted and then cut and conformed to create a final print.
Kino's new Blu-ray is courtesy of The Library of Congress, which has preserved an original nitrate 35mm print, and the results are wonderful, albeit unrestored, which is just fine.
Robert Israel's score works nicely with the visuals.
