For the present, it's difficult to view Kick-Ass, a terrific and fun production, based upon a graphic novel, without relating it to the horrific events that took place in Las Vegas.
The fact is, that even though Kick-Ass is comic book / graphic novel violence, it's an extremely violent film, led by our heroine, a trained killer...
at eleven years-old.
Then newcomer, Chloe Grace Moretz has kill numbers almost up in Wick territory.
I'm not going to take a political position on guns, although we all know that guns in the wrong hands are not good.
But for all the over-the-top fun that this film brings to an audience, it's hard not to bring the event, and the film together, while viewing.
Regardless, I still needed to review this disc, and make those fans who love the film -- which is now, impossibly, seven years old -- aware that it's been released in 4k.
Kick-Ass was shot on film, in Canada, with studio work in the UK. It's not an American production, even though it may appear to be. It was completed, presumably as a 2k DI, sometime late in 2009.
Lionsgate, which has a superb reputation for quality home video releases, is giving us many of their library in 4k. Kick-Ass gains a tiny bit of resolution, but the difference between the earlier (now 7 year-old) Blu-ray, and the new 4k, will be found in HDR, which works within the graphic novel universe, and Dolby Atmos, which adds depth to the audio stage.
I loved this film when it arrived back in '07, probably mostly based upon Moretz' spunky performance as Hit-Girl.
It's still a terrific piece of entertainment.
It's just that this may not be the best time to view it and try to laugh.
Some of the top 4k releases, such as Deadpool, have been hitting numbers above 250,000. Let's see where this one lands.
