For the present, it's difficult to view Kick-Ass, a terrific and fun production, based upon a graphic novel, without relating it to the horrific events that took place in Las Vegas.

The fact is, that even though Kick-Ass is comic book / graphic novel violence, it's an extremely violent film, led by our heroine, a trained killer...

at eleven years-old.

Then newcomer, Chloe Grace Moretz has kill numbers almost up in Wick territory.

I'm not going to take a political position on guns, although we all know that guns in the wrong hands are not good.

But for all the over-the-top fun that this film brings to an audience, it's hard not to bring the event, and the film together, while viewing.

Regardless, I still needed to review this disc, and make those fans who love the film -- which is now, impossibly, seven years old -- aware that it's been released in 4k.

Kick-Ass was shot on film, in Canada, with studio work in the UK. It's not an American production, even though it may appear to be. It was completed, presumably as a 2k DI, sometime late in 2009.

Lionsgate, which has a superb reputation for quality home video releases, is giving us many of their library in 4k. Kick-Ass gains a tiny bit of resolution, but the difference between the earlier (now 7 year-old) Blu-ray, and the new 4k, will be found in HDR, which works within the graphic novel universe, and Dolby Atmos, which adds depth to the audio stage.

I loved this film when it arrived back in '07, probably mostly based upon Moretz' spunky performance as Hit-Girl.

It's still a terrific piece of entertainment.

It's just that this may not be the best time to view it and try to laugh.

Some of the top 4k releases, such as Deadpool, have been hitting numbers above 250,000. Let's see where this one lands.

Image - 5 (Dolby Vision)

Audio - 5 (Dolby Atmos)

4k - 5

Pass / Fail - Pass

Highly Recommended

I watched this film twice during its theatrical run so I obviously liked it a lot. I thought the 4K/UHD disc was outstanding in both, video and audio presentations. The Dolby Vision stood out to me along with the Dolby Atmos track. Of course, it's Hit Girl that makes this film so much fun for me along with the soundtrack. In the past, I wish they would revisit the Hit Girl character again as an adult which they didn't with Portman's character in The Professional.

I thought this was a fine UHD, no complaints. I really can't wait to read a few words about Dracula and Bridge on the River Kwai though!
Yeah, I picked up Dracula this morning for $19.96 at my local Walmart while Bridge on the River Kwai is in the mail for me.

I also swung by my Walmart, yesterday for Dracula. Cancelled my Amazon order for it, and saved around $6. Although, TBOTRK is en route from Amazon along with a couple others.(CE3K & E.T.) I'm really like over the top excited to watch Dracula though, haven't popped it in quite yet, waiting for the weekend. I was all over the Dracula 4K remaster(Supreme Cinema Series)a couple years ago when it released, transfer was imo, gorgeous. I can imagine with that same remaster used on this new UHD, it'll be a stunner.

I have a question for Mr. Harris. What does he think of Lionsgate approach of scanning film outs in 4K for these "cheap" catalogue titles? Why do they do it? What do they think they are gaining with this? This one again apparently is not from the DI but a film source. I think flooding the market with pseudo 4K scans of film outs from 2K DIs is doing a big disservice to this quality medium and cheapening it for no valid reason.

I haven’t confirmed that LG is following that path. If they are, and I’m only guessing, they’re processing dozens of their films in 4k, it may be easier to run a digital negative, as opposed to pulling data files, confirming their proprietary, and getting them back on line.

Keep in mind that data files have a life of perpetuity, or seven years, whichever is shorter...

If I were doing it, I’d pull the 2k data.

I watched this recently and I'm really impressed with the image quality. I really wish the second film was available UHD as well.

Whatever the reason they were doing it, thankfully they stopped shortly after Kick-Ass was released. All their recent UHDs have been much better.
