Make no mistake. Hilda Crane, which Twilight Time is now offering on Blu-ray, is a soap opera.

But it's a good one.

With a screenplay by Philip Dunne, (How Green Was My Valley, The Last of the Mohicans, Forever Amber) and derived from the play by Samson Raphaelson, there's meat on the bones.

And then there's Jean Simmons.

The new Blu, is from a CinemaScope master provided by Fox, and it looks wonderful, with proper grain, and color that has that has an appropriate deluxe appearance.

Look for Judith Evelyn, a name that you may not recognize (she spent most of her time working in TV), as Hilda's mother. You may recognize the face from Rear Window, in which she played Miss Lonelyhearts, or from Giant, in which she played Paul Fix's wife.

"Judith Evelyn"

And also as the mute wife of the silent film theater proprietor in William Castle's The Tingler, who fell prey to the titular monster.

Actually, she fell prey to her husband...who scared her to death!

That was Philip Coolidge, who has been showing up in practically every third episode of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS I've been catching in reruns. He seems to be mixed up in some relative's demise a lot in that era.

Hilda Crane is based on a 1950 Broadway flop (it lasted 2 months) with Jessica Tandy and Beulah Bondi in the Jean Simmons and Judith Evelyn roles. I suspect the film version (which I quite enjoy) is very different from the play but I have a hard time seeing Jessica Tandy as Hilda after the luminous Simmons. A heads up on the wonderful David Raksin underscore.

Judith Evelyn had a pretty distinguished career on the New York stage before she went into movies. Nice review. I was never able to see this film until now

This is a film I know nothing about.

I don't think I had ever even heard it's title before!

But I've learned one important thing from this review.

And then there's Jean Simmons.

That's nearly all I need to know about a film. :D

And she is superb and lovely in it. It's worth buying just for her. I did and watched it immediately. You won't be sorry!
