An oddity, because it won the Academy Award for Special Effects, Green Dolphin Street isn't in any way a fx film - but I guess neither is San Francisco.

Based upon the novel by Elizabeth Goudge, this is an all-star soap-opera, with a screenplay by Samson Raphaelson.

It's also one of those films that I believe may work better today than it did in 1947, and is worth the almost 2 1/2 hours of your time.

One of the reasons is also that Warner Archive's new Blu-ray is a gorgeous affair, in stunning black and white.

An under-rated gem, especially with its cast - Lana Turner, fresh off her stint on Postman, Van Heflin, Donna Reed, Frank Morgan, Richard Hart (his main screen appearance), Dame May Whitty and Gladys Cooper.
