From Henry Koster, one of the filmmakers who hit just about every genre during his career, came a domestic musical, based upon the Rogers & Hammerstein theatrical experience, with an almost entirely Asian cast.
This was also Mr. Koster's first outing with that new fangled anamorphic process called Panavision. CinemaScope was old hat.
Nancy Kwan - born in China of Chinese father and British mother - had made her first mark on the industry the year before co-starring with William Holden in The World of Suzie Wong.
The pleasant surprise here, viewing the film via projection, was the quality. Everything about the imagery (and audio, derived from the original 4-track magnetic source, which is extremely full and rich) had me thinking I was seeing 4k, and only by walking up to the screen, and taking a very close look at the grain structure, was I able to get my head wrapped around the fact that it was only a Blu-ray. It's that good.
The fact that it was shot by the great Russell Metty is an absolute part of that equation.
It's nice to finally have another of the R & H musicals in a more highly resolved form.
Image – 5
Audio – 5 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)
Pass / Fail – Pass
Upgrade from first Blu-ray – Yes
Works up-rezzed to 4k - Lovely!
Highly Recommended
