In typical Columbia / Sony fashion, Paul Greengrass' 2013 Captain Phillips is a perfect 4k UHD release, in both image as well as aural categories.
Combining Mr. Hanks' chamelion-like ability to play the everyman in the Gary Cooper mode, with Mr. Greengrass' double strengths of combining an almost documentary-styled feature with the dramatic, the film delivers a feature film that cranks up visceral tension as the plot progresses.
Based upon reality, it tells the story of an American container ship captain (we know he a family man from the short prologue) whose vessel is attacked by pirates. Think not 16th through 18th century bandits of the sea, but rather uneducated Solmalians under preassure from a local bully "war lord" to deliver.
I have a dear friend who used to cruise the world, whose ship was attacked by similar pirates, but in her case they were warded off by water canons.
Technically, everything is where it should be. Color, grain, black levels, all held together by a Dolby Atmos mix.
Wonderful film.
Examplery 4k release.
For packaging fans, it arrives in a beautifully designed Steelbook, worth the price of admission. Akin to many Steelbook releases, I'd not believe it to be available beyond the first printing. Be forewarned.
