I've always thought that Mr. Friedkin's Bug played as though it might have originally been intended for David Cronenberg. Ashley Judd, Michael Shannon and Harry Connick, jr. fill out the leads.

This title is from Lionsgate, while The Hunted is courtesy of Paramount, and the looks are quite different. As are the DPs.

Bug has a slightly softer appearance, with a less critical image, but the quality is there, shining through in 4k, even if we may not be hitting that number.

How many of Mr. Friedkin's films have arrived thus far in 4k of the twenty or so he directed?

Image (Dolby Vision)

Forensic - 10
NSD - 10

Audio – 10 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

Pass / Fail – Pass

Plays nicely with projectors - Yes

Makes use of and works well in 4k - 6.5

Upgrade from Blu-ray - Yes

Worth your attention - Yes

Slipcover rating - 2

Looks like Film - 10

Highly Recommended

It is sort of a mix of Cronenberg and Kafka. Count me amazed this has been released in 4K.

I am definitely in.

Friedkin went back and forth throughout his career between pushing envelopes and staying comfortably within boundaries. It's no accident that most of his films that are considered "classics" fall within the former category, not the latter. I'm happy that he ended his career by pushing boundaries with films like Bug and Killer Joe, although he pushed boundaries enough in those cases that they still haven't received wide acceptance yet. Bug, in particular, is just too much for some people. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
