For those who might wish to believe that filmmaker Rian Johnson arrived onto the scene fully formed some five years ago with his stellar detective yarn, Knives Out, may be surprised to find a lovely little film entitled Brick, from 2005.

I had first encountered Brick via a recommendation, and was able to find it via a UK R2 Blu-ray, which I imported. This was followed, as it always does once I import, by a Blu-ray from Kino, and now their 4k UHD release.

It's a beauty.

The tale of a high school loner making his way through this neo-noir, it's also of the detective genre, as Joseph Gordon Levitt attempts to solve a murder.

My advice. Just grab a copy.

A beautiful OCN scan by Universal, with all the attributes you'd presume to come with their work.

Here's Mr. Ebert's take:

Image (Dolby Vision)

Forensic - 8.5
NSD - 10

Audio – 10 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

Pass / Fail – Pass

Plays nicely with projectors - Yes

Makes use of and works well in 4k - 7.5

Upgrade from Blu-ray - Yes

Worth your attention - Yes

Slipcover rating - 2

Highly Recommended

I'll be watching my 4K/UHD this month during our annual "Noirvember Challenge".

I learned about it on a recommendation, too, and I suspect it was actually RAH's original mention of it that had me importing that first Blu-ray. I was so taken with it that I didn't even notice till I had the Kino BD in hand that the import had been a PAL transfer. (I got hoodwinked the same way on an imported Lost Highway. Nothing like running a film too fast.)

A remarkable film.

I'll have to give this one another look sometime. I only saw it once, also via a recommendation, back around the time of its original release. My recollection is that I was annoyed by the "hard-boiled noir" dialogue and thought it was trying too hard to be clever. I may have just been in a bad mood that day.

I had the same initial reaction, but after awhile I got into the film enough not to mind. I remember having a chuckle seeing Lucas Haas (of Witness fame) as a very different sort of character.
