With eight previous films under her belt in which she played Natasha Romanoff, Scarlett Johansson should be getting the hang of it. And she has as she's now played the role for 1/4 of her life.

On its face Black Widow finally gives us the background that everyone has been seeking, and we now know that the character did not arrive fully grown for the sole purpose of appearing in Marvel films. She was once a child.

That taken care of via a quality film in which Ms Johansson receives backup from Florence Pugh, playing her younger sister (Yelena Belova) with a Russian accent. The English do tend to do accents far better than Colonists.

A Marvel TV series pushing the Belova character should show up in 2023, at which time we'll find that Thor is her half-brother, and she'll also be tied into the Star War universe via finding that her father is actually Luke's great-grandfather.

Heavy on action, and with a superbly mixed track, presented on the 4k disc in Dolby Atmos, the film works nicely.

Interestingly, the Blu-ray does not receive the Atmos and is presented in 7.1

On the tech basis, the production used a variety of capture mechanisms, all funneling down to a final 4k DI.

Disney's new 4k UHD disc looks 4k appropriate for an effects film, and works beautifully in projection with zero HDR problems.

One more thing...

For those who felt that the young lady playing Young Natasha (Ever Anderson) looked vaguely familiar. She should. Her mom is Mila Jovovich.

Image – 5

Audio – 5 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

Pass / Fail – Pass

Plays nicely with projectors - Yes

Makes use of and works well in 4k - 5

Warner seems reliable in offering their blu-ray customers Atmos on new releases (not always catalog).

Disney loves to downgrade their product for the home experience. Been doing it for decades.

Isn’t that standard now? “You want Atmos? Ya gotta buy 4K.”

Depends on which studio/which format. Disney is Atmos for 4K, not BD. Warner is Atmos for 4K and 2D BD, but not 3D BD. (Warner used to offer Atmos across the board but stopped putting it on 3D BDs around 2017.) Paramount and Universal support it for both. Sony seems case by case.

I'd watch that.

But seriously...2023 is farther out than you needed to go. Yelena will appear in Hawkeye, which starts streaming on Disney+ on November 24.
